It Happened Again
What a night! Oh, my days! What a night that was. The Champions' League semi-final is laced with comebacks. We thought we had seen it all with Liverpool and Barcelona and now, Tottenham sparked a second-half comeback that left their coach; Mauricio Pochettino in tears at the end of the final whistle.
We thought Ajax would walk over this when they scored the first goal in the 4th minute from their skipper. Now, they scored a brilliant second without any response from Tottenham. I don't know what the coach told them at half time but whatever it is surely struck a chord in the players and their second half was far better than the first.
They came with a renewed belief while Ajax thought it would be for them as it was in the second half. Football will always surprise you in a moment of relapse and yes, Ajax were stunned!
Lucas Moura took the ball that Dele Alli carried into the box and Lucas, in his usual skillful way, danced his way into the box and slotted it home in the 54th minute. Just a minute after, another goal came in with Lucas' signature all written over it. There was a confusion from Onana and his defender. He was about to catch the ball but the defender wanted to be sure. The ball spilt from them and Lucas twisted and turned only to find the back of the net. Tottenham believed they can go all the way at that moment. What a way to mark your 50th Champions' League appearance for Lucas Moura.
Lucas wasn't done as in the 95th minute; with the last kick of the match, Sissoko launched a long ball forward which Llorente did well to knock on the path for Dele Alli, who then wasted no time to release it for Lucas Moura, who was smart enough to hit it one time and the ball ended into the back of the net; away from the diving hands of Ajax's goalkeeper; Onana. What a night of emotions. What a comeback. What a way to get into the final in Madrid. Ajax was stunned and they couldn't believe their collapse.
Lucas denied the hope of these young and exciting guns and this experience would shape them into a better team as a whole.
I knew Tottenham were up to something special when Lucas scored in the 54th and 55th, just as Liverpool scored in the 54th and 56th as it was also in Istanbul (2005) when Gerrard and Smicer both scored in the 54th and 56th respectively. There is something significant about that timing.
What a night that was. Tottenham created history and I am super impressed by them. Liverpool v Tottenham in the final; All English final. If Chelsea and Arsenal also qualified in their respective Europa League games, it will be another all English final. What a remarkable achievement for the English teams.
Mauricio Pochettino; Tottenham's coach didn't sign anyone in two transfer windows. He had to make do with the players he had. Tottenham also had some complications with their new stadium. Pochettino got linked to the Manchester United's job all the time and he had Harry Kane injured in a crucial game.
They were fourth in the league and knocked out Manchester City in the Quarterfinals too and now they have gone all the way to the final. What an effort from Tottenham and what a great achievement for Mauricio Pochettino. He deserved all the respect you can give him for this remarkable comeback.
