Why Solo Mode Could Be a Mistake for Apex Legends

in #sportstalk5 years ago (edited)

News broke recently that a special event is going to take place in Apex Legends next week.

Throughout the event, there will be a limited time special game mode for players to get stuck into. Yes, it's finally happening. Solo mode is coming to Apex Legends.

Now, when developers add limited time only game modes it tends to just mean that they want to collect data on it before deciding whether or not it will become a full feature of the game.

As a solo player, solo mode is something I've thought about quite a lot and, in fact, I had been hoping that they'd add it to the game. Playing as a solo player in a team of 3 can be difficult if you're matched up with people who aren't quite as good at the game or simply don't believe in teamwork.

Yet, now that solo mode is here, I can't help but feel somewhat cautious about it.

Since playing ranked mode for the last month or so, I've taken much more notice of the strengths and weaknesses of each legend in the game. When there is something on the line and it's not just a casual game, I'm more likely to try to find any form of advantage that I can.

And therein lies the problem. Ranked mode has simply highlighted the fact that certain legends are much more useful than others. Of course, there is an element of subjective choice, but there are a few legends that stand out about the rest.

For example, Pathfinder is almost always part of a ranked team. His ability to get around the map quickly, evade enemies, and find advantageous positions make him an incredibly powerful legend. Bangalore's passive ability that allows her to move more quickly when spotted by an enemy and her ability to both drop smoke and airstrikes again puts her near the top of the list.

There are a couple more but the point here is that quite a lot of legends aren't getting anywhere near the attention that they used to for one reason or another.

My fear is that solo mode will only serve to highlight this further. With nobody competing with teammates for legend selection, it's conceivable that we could see an entire solo game filled with just 1 or 2 legends.

One of the best things about Apex Legends is that a lot of the legends complement each other. A combination of Bangalore's smoke and Bloodhound's Beast of the Hunt ultimate works perfectly. But without each other, both abilities lose their edge. This is just one example but hopefully, you get the point.

I will, of course, be giving solo mode a play through to see how things go but I must admit that I'm not sure that it's going to be the best thing for Apex Legends with the current legend roster.
