THE NATIONAL PLEDGE I PLEDGE TO NIGERIA MY COUNTRY TO BE FAITHFUL LOYAL AND HONEST TO SERVE NIGERIA WITH ALL MY STRENGTH TO DEFEND HER UNITY AND UPHOLD HER HONOUR AND GLORY SO HELP ME GOD.

The National pledge was created by Prof(Mrs) Felicia Adebola Adedoyin in 1976.She was propelled by some necessary challanges provided by her children who always ask why there is no pledge been receited in their country Nigeria when they do receite pledges of another country.

This questions propelled their mother to conceive and originate a National pledge for Nigeria which she acheived in June 1976.Her creative work was featured in Daily times of July 15,1976 in an article titiled "Loyalty to National pledge". Barrister Adewusi who was a mutual friend of the Adedoyin's and Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, read the Daily times article and eventually presented it to Obasanjo in August 1976.

Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo who was the head of states accepted and modified it and ordered students to be recieting the pledge everyday at their assemblies. The pledge is a promise made by citizens or an office holder to obey, keep and maintain rules and orders. Our political leaders or political office holders are sworn into office to keep to the rules and administrative procedures not only to obey the laws of the land.

People who makes a pledge are expected and supposed to be bound by it, they are to be faithful, loyal and honest in anything they are doing under their respective offices.

However, its heartbreaking to note that, none of these office holders who looted our treasury and corrupted the system were asked to account for breaking their pledge.

Our political leaders or political office holders do of course not know what the word UPHOLD NIGERIA’S HONOUR AND GLORY implies nor do they know the implication of the word SO HELP ME GOD.

Our leaders are supposed to serve Nigeria with all their might, defend our unity and uphold Nigeria’s honor and glory. If we closely look and check in at the activities of our past and present leaders, the point am trying to make in this text will be revealed.

Have they fulfilled the pledge? Or are they trying to make their pledge a false one. What is wrong in fulfilling the pledge? This is what we all signed for as been a citizen of this great country.

Is it not right that one who fails to honor his pledge should be called to order or made to face the law of the land?...... This is the essence of this article, let us keep to our rules and honor our pledge for the safety of our country and generations to come.
