Tanaman tembelekan merupakan perdu tegak atau setengah merambat. Tanaman ini termasuk anggota famili Verbenaceae yang berasal dari Amerika tropis. Tanaman ini bisa ditemukan di dataran rendah hingga ketinggian 1700 m dpl, tumbuh pada tempat terbuka yang terkena sinar matahari atau agak ternaung.

3. Daunnya tunggal, berbentuk seperti bulat telur, bentuk ujungnya meruncing, tepinya bergerigi, permukaan atas berambut banyak dan terasa kasar pada saat diraba, permukaan bawah berambut jarang, daun duduk berhadapan, dan tulang daun menyirip.

4. Bunganya ada yang berwarna putih, kuning, merah muda, atau warna lain, membentuk rangkaian yang bersifat rasemos.

5. Memiliki buah yang serupa buah buni, apabila matang berwarna hitam mengkilat.

Daun tembelekan mengandung bermacam macam minyak atsiri, namun yang dimanfaatkan sebagai obat hanya beberapa jenis saja, misalnya sineol. Sineol mudah menguap dan pedas, berkhasiat sebagai ekspektoran (pelepas dahak atau lendir). Minyak atsiri lain seperti terpineol bersifat antiseptik sedangkan furfurol bersifat fungisida. Kedua minyak atsiri ini bermanfaat untuk merawat bengkak akibat luka yang terinfeksi.
