Don't Wait For SMT's

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

Many of us have been waiting for Smart Media Tokens (SMT's) to launch on the Steem blockchain since they were promised all those years ago.

I keep seeing people post about how revolutionary they will be, how all of these amazing projects can create their own tokens. Everyone keeps talking about how amazing SMT's are and acting as if they're already released, of which they're not. Here is the thing, you don't need to wait for SMT's thanks to @steem-eng an initiative by @aggroed and a few others, notably @harpagon who is doing some great work on the development side of things.

While Steem Engine tokens cannot do everything that SMT's have promised they can do, we have to remember that SMT's haven't been released and we might not see them until 2020. Everyone is making assumptions about what SMT's will do, but the reality is Steemit Inc recently wound back the scale and feature set of them, so even when they are released, they won't work as promised in the white paper.

Work on Steem Engine seems to be going full Steem ahead, with additional features such as consensus currently being built as we speak. Soon if you run a node you can earn crypto for doing so like Steem witnesses.

I have been delving into Steem Engine and while it offers a simplistic approach right now, it's quite powerful and already capable of providing your own custom tokens. My advice would be to host your own node so you can publish your own smart contracts.

I'll have some learning resources out shortly for how to write your own basic contracts for Steem Engine. Stay tuned.

So, if you're waiting for SMT's, you don't have too. You can create custom token functionality now, don't let this hold you back.

I really hope we can get Steem Engine support for most projects soon... There is really no reason not to at this point. It's the path of least resistance. And would only make the blockchain more decentralized if community members just threw it together and everybody loves it.

It would be nice to see (if stermit inc ever releslases smts) some sort of crossover function. Basically, being able to take what steemengine has already developed and roll it over into an smt with a click of a button (or some other easy step)
