DDoS on Steemit.com and Why Businesses Should be on Steem
Hello everyone! As most Steemians might have already know, steemit.com suffered a DDoS attack which crippled the site. As I am writing this post, Steem Twitter account has not updated the status. Hence, I suppose the attack is still ongoing. Though the attack is being mitigated, there will likely still be intermittent connection issues and performance degradation.
What is a DDoS Attack
A DDoS attack is short for Distributed Denial of Service attack. It is an attempt to shutdown a website by flooding the web server with bad requests originating from tens and hundreds of thousands of nodes. It can be pretty devastating and most small companies or sites are unable to defend against large scale attacks. However, free services, like those from Cloudflare, are available to mitigate smaller scale attacks.
The Paradoxical Title
So you might be wondering what's with the paradoxical title. Why recommend businesses to build a presence on Steem when Steemit.com is down? The reasoning is simple, though Steemit.com is under attack and unstable, Steem blockchain remains unaffected. That's because Steemit.com is merely an interface, the important data are stored on the Steem blockchain which is much more resilient than the Steemit.com website.
During this time while Steemit.com is fighting fire, the other interfaces are unaffected. Steempeak.com, Busy.org, Steeve.app and Partiko are all up and running just to name a few. Such is the power of decentralization.
Many businesses these days rely on having a Facebook page to host all their information for their customers. However, Facebook and Instagram services were also disrupted yesterday affecting millions of users. If you run a business, it is therefore wise to have a backup plan. Why not also have a presence on Steem?
Post Once and Appear in Multiple Sites
Steem is probably the only media outlet to allow a user to post once and have your article shows up on multiple websites. This not only helps build up your internet footprint, it also adds some resiliency to your content. Moreover, Steem is censorship resistant and not under one central control. You won't be banned on Steem.

A great aspect and you're definitely right.
I hope the Steemit guys will start a huge media campaign very soon, most of the people outside there just don't know about the great possibilities of Steemit.

Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, I think Steemit Inc is currently running a bit low in funds. I doubt they will be able to conduct any major marketing. It will be up to the community to spread the word and hope for organic growth

are we at risk of this happening again? If so, can we do anything to prevent it, or make it so we can recover faster? And if so, are we doing those things?

Yea, I heard but not personally affected. Haha.. potentially a targeted attack on major tech companies. Or simply just some failures of US ISPs
