Steemit nearing 1M accounts, but just 6% active users.

in #steem6 years ago

Isn't the title just sad? Saw an article by @aggroed cheering for steemit for making it to almost a million accounts. Imagine counting 1,2,3,...to 1,000,000. That's a lot. Kudos to @ned, and all the #ambassadors making this possible. Steemit is close to 1,000,000 accounts and only 60,000 of this users are actually active. So where is the remaining 940,000?? Are they ghost accounts or just bots? There's been allegations of accounts being spam created. Could that be the reason?

I'm a little minnow, so I might not understand some of this things, but its very disheartening to hear something like this. Who wouldn't love to get paid for sharing his though with the world? Why will people not be active if they could earn money from here?

If steemit is this great, why are there few active users??

I leave you with @imlikett's comments on @aggroed's post...

Man, as much as I like good news for the platform, I have a hard time maintaining any sort of possible outlook on it, as there don't seem any indications of must need changes happening anytime soon.
60k active users a day... Yet only 5-10 of the same users get any recognition worth mentioning, and even THEY use bid bots to squash anything out.
Tell people you made some money here.
90% of people aren't making money here. If you do it's so few and far between it's not consistent enough to make it worthwhile to someone outside of the loop, or who isn't already dedicated to the platform.
Tell people you didn't get kicked off the platform for sharing an image people didn't like.
This is code for, "tell people you can use copywrited content with no repercussions?" 80% of the front page is stolen stock photos, or taken from google images with not even a lick of credit to the original creator. (just like this post).
Tell people how you can cash it out.
Yes, here friend, first make a Steemit and this is your wallet, then make a binance, then trade into bitcoin or etherium after you upload your passport 3 times, then make a coinbase, and then setup a PayPal... etc...
It's just not streamlined enough for average users.
Tell people how a few of your votes can feed a Venezuelan artist for a month.
As much as this may be true, most people don't care about that, and are in it for your first point - make money. Also, let's be realistic, Minnows aren't feeding anyone. An upvote doesn't mean anything unless it has some seriously steem behind it... you can get 200 upvotes and not even make .05 cents. After transactions fees... you can't even cash out. Not to mention votes don't bump your post to trending, only monetary gain does.
You can tell people about the Drama too. Frankly sometimes that's entertaining too.
You don't have to, the front trending page does this on it's own, and causes people to instantly ditch the platform. Trending is either a Steem circle jerk of over-hype, in-fighting, or spam with bot rewards. If you like obsessing over crypto and crypto news sprinkled with shitposting and drama... most people just go back to reddit so they can at least curate what they want to see.
Sorry to be so negative, but I have tried to get 5 of my friends on board, and 3 of them bailed because they didn't even get their accounts activated after 3 weeks, and lost interest. 1 was able to hold out, made and account and was like, meh, got turned off by trending and found the 'monetary' incentive to be nothing but a pipe dream.
Most people are not poor Venezuelans, and have other sources of income where the time and effort to grow on Steem to make it worth while, is not worth their time.
Also, not sure how I feel about Steem being marketed the same as those, 'feed a dying child' guilt trip commercials. If a person in dire need of money isn't creating content worth upvoting, I won't upvote... not because I feel the need to be a humanitarian. Not trying to be an ass, but it's true.
Sorry to be so 'negative' but, these post sorta Urk me, as I feel the hype is just protecting users from the truth, and limits the push for change. I mean 1million accounts and only 60k active users? How many of those active users are bots, and alts, and how many are actually big enough to make a difference and curate the platform? That to me says this platform needs a lot of work.
I am more apt to NOT tell people about steem with the current state of things, because they will be less likely to return to it in the future.
Anyway, I digress. Go Steem!

I totally accept all the negative points and many are well founded.

But those who adopt first will have these problems. Over time it will get better and you will be one of the pioneers who went to a new city and ended up with that amazing apartment that was once on the outskirts but is now the new centre and prime location.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

Do you remember what Facebook looked like when it first launched? It was sh*t! But it's USP was that it had real people with real names and you could connect with them.

Steemits USP is the monetisation of content with no advertising. I don't see anyone else around who is doing it better.

Hopefully when @steemit stop their vanity SMT project and get back to improving this platform it will see further growth.

If the price of STEEM goes up (which is very likely), suddenly all those plankton will go run and tell all their friends.

Growth will come, it will just take time.

@kabir88

Thanks for your comment @kabir88. Don’t you think 2 years and counting is enough time to see things running smoothly? We have the likes of Facebook to learn from. Don’t you think Steemit shouldn’t repeat history, or things they consider mistakes from other sites like Facebook?

That's a bit like saying the first electric car should be perfect and have all the same functions as a petrol car because they can learn from the old tech.

In a way, you are right. But the underlying technology is vastly different.

I do think there is need for a lot of improvement, but, hey, we are both here using the platform and I just made you $0.13

Where else can you do that today?

😅😅

Thanks for the $0.13, appreciated. Steemit isn’t perfect, but it’s the best we’ve got now.

Indeed and if something better comes along, we can all move together ;)

I love hearing about peoples experience of steemit in other countries, so do keep me posted. Notifications on steemit and busy are not great, so just tag me or drop me message in discord

It is a sad figure, to see how low the active user base is, but I have faith it will grow. I would be willing to throw in the towel say 3-5years from now if nothing changes. Facebook went from 1 million to 3.5 million users in a year. After that point it started to explode. We are still in the infancy, and there are plenty of problems we need to address.

Let’s hope we are able to do better than that in a year. Fingers crossed 🤞
