I Am A Slave…

I remember back in the days when I was a teenager, I used to listen to music a lot and I had this small pocket sized cassette player that I carried around with me most times. I had an ear piece which I plugged into the cassette player to enjoy my music without needing to repeatedly tell my younger ones to be quiet or having interference from the surrounding noises.

How I Became A Slave

There was this jam that was just released by a young South African guy called Lucky Dube, the title of the song was ”I Am A Slave”. It was an instant hit in Nigeria, and almost all the youths were into the song, you could hear it on the TV, Radio and clubs. I was one of those youths that loved the song and I was into reggae music too. One of the days I was listening to my slave songs and was singing along aloud and dancing as if I was under the influence of something because that was the way you danced to reggae music, you fling your head front and back so that your dreadlocks falls on your face when your head is down and on your back when your head is back. No, I did not have dreadlocks then and I wasn't smoking weeds too. Lol. But you had to dance that way to get into the reggae feeling.

No Chance To Explain

The next thing I felt was a heavy slap that landed at the back of my head and that almost made me fell to the ground. I turned to see who hit me and lo and behold it was my mother. She shouted at me, you are not a slave and no child of mine will ever be a slave, she pulled off the eye piece from my ear and almost hit me again with anger but I was quick enough to move away before she landed another painful slap. She must have thought I was under the influence of weed (ganja, gbana, marijuana where some of the names it was called), My voice was so load and I was jumping and shaking my head vigorously. Lol.

Now I have to explain something to you guys, back in the days you never replied your parents with anger, your voice had to sound very humble, you don’t talk back or look at them directly in the face, you don’t ask too many questions or act disobediently to them. If you did such the whole village will hear your matter. Lol. And that my friend could even affect your chances of getting married. Yeah! People will be talking and saying "is it not that one that doesn't respect his parents, how will he respect his father-in-law?". Lol. I just went on the errand she sent me before she remembers to confiscates my small cassette player.

Mother Later Understood The Meaning

One of the days the family was seated watching a TV show and a caller requested for the song, it was played and my mother finally understood what the song was about based on the video. She didn’t tell me sorry for hitting me though, parents those days hardly apologized directly, they’ll however do some things for you to show their remorse. Lol. About 5 years ago, I was playing the song on my laptop while working at home and I heard a female voice singing along, it was my mother. Lol. Even though I was married, with a kid and was way much older now. I knew if it was something she totally disapproved of she would have hit me again, but she didn’t and she sang along.

In Conclusion

A lot of us are in an area that people don’t understand which is crypto-currency. They don’t understand you or what you’re doing, they don’t see a future in this crazy crypto thingy. They think you’re wasting you precious time. I think the best time to get more Steem is now, once a lot of people notice it, it might be too late or too expensive. So forget about the abuses and continue to do your thing because they are coming to join you sooner than you think. Lol.

Here is the Lucky Dube – Slave song that got me into trouble so many years ago. He was shut dead some years ago but a lot of his beats can still be heard on the radio and watched on the TV.
