The difference between regulation and decentralisation

in #steem5 years ago (edited)

I see a bunch of people shilling Steem at Elizabeth Warren. Please understand that Steem is the opposite of what Mrs. Warren suggests, even though the problem may be similar.

The problem

Corporations have too much power, Facebook & co are abusing their monopoly. They breach your privacy, censor content as they please, and offer a platform to miscreants to manipulate the userbase's emotions and thoughts.

Steem's "solution"

Double down on Facebook, except now give all power to the wealthy individuals and corporations, instead of one entity. Give up on privacy completely, make it public, don't bother moderating hate speech or other illegal activities. The difference is now you have to be rich to be a miscreant.

The anti-trust solution

Government regulation breaks up Facebook and other monopolies abusing their power into separate different companies. This is what Mrs. Warren has proposed thus far, though there'll be more details to come. Her policies are built around the concept of accountable capitalism, i.e. capitalism with regulation. Steem is the exact opposite, Steem is capitalism with ZERO accountability. This is a pretty good article to catch up on her stance on crypto and why she won't be interested in Steem.

The regulation solution

In an damning report by a UK committee, it is recommended that social media may be a public utility that needs to be regulated by the government. To be clear, social networks will remain private and capitalist, but there'll be stringent government oversight to ensure these networks maintain privacy rights, eliminate hate speech and illegal content, and do not abuse their monopoly.

Shill your favourite coins by all means, but please don't do so mindlessly, it makes the network look bad. DYOR.

PS: Countries have laws against hate speech, harmful content and privacy abuse. So while you may believe in unmoderated, censorless "free speech", please respect the laws of the lands.

Sort:

Hard to disagree with in its current state. But I think it's only true for front-ends looking to be a "vanilla experience" of Steem. The solution I see is still Steem-based, where any communities can have a platform within Steem powering a front-end with or without an SMT where they are able to regulate as they see fit and where an outside person who doesn't respect those said rules have nothing to say, regardless of their SP.

Yes, Communities with moderation makes a lot of sense.

Too bad, the post by @andarchy and @oracle-d got more eyes than yours, any idea how to bring your point to more users?
I believe more users should be reading this. I will resteem.

Thanks, yes, resteem is the best way to to get the word out.

I always felt the "free speech" thing just meant, "let me be an asshole and not have to face up to the consequences".

100% agree with your take on Steemit, and it's why I disagree with libertarianism. The objectivity of capital concentration and accumulation forever means that, without any rules, those with the biggest stacks, win.

To be clear, it's not really my take, and I'm neither arguing for or against libertarianism.

Just pointing out that Elizabeth Warren's policies are absolutely incompatible with Steem. She would agree with you though.
