STEEM: The Blockchain Of Opportunity....If You Want It

in #steem6 years ago

The developers called STEEM the blockchain on opportunity. I like this saying and believe it captures the essence of what is going on here.

In the context they were using it, it applied to other developers. They want to put together tools for those who know coding to be able to come to the STEEM blockchain and create applications that will help this place to grow. They realize that a blockchain is only as good as the community and that comes from the applications that attract people.

So far, this industry has talked about the different blockchains in particular. The masses, when they start to transition over, will not care about a blockchain. It is the applications that are going to be their concern. If one likes a certain app, he or she will use it. The blockchain it is on means nothing to this person.

Yesterday, I put out a challenge to all Minnows (and Planktons) as a way, I believe, they can shift some of the tide in terms of the reward pool. Basically, the idea is that 10,000 of these people commit to posting 3-4 times daily in the month of July. The way I understand the reward pool, this will create such a large numbers of posts that they would overwhelm the system, thus garnering a larger percentage of the reward pool collectively. Couple this with each person agreeing to use the 10 100% upcotes that each has and we should see those categories jump significantly.

An interesting thing happened. We started to get the excuses as to why people could not do that. Here is an opportunity to take part in something that could help the platform and smaller accounts. It is regularly pointed out that many larger accounts do not vote for the smaller ones. Here is a path, I believe that will counter-balance that a bit.

What it also tells me is people are not aware of the tools on here. The most cited objection is that 3-4 posts a day is spamming and that they will not be quality posts. We all know quality posts is a relative term. That aside, it is not spamming. In fact, 3-4 posts is rather simple when one takes a look at the different application available on here.

Steepshot

Steeptshot is an Instagram type application. One is able to take photos and easily post them on the STEEM blockchain. It is a rather effective and quick way to do things. Using this application is not spamming when one takes an interesting photos and posts it.

Zappl

Zappl is a twitter-like application which is under the "microblogging" category. This will enable a person to express ideas in a shorter manner. The limit is 240 characters which means ones needs to be concise in the thought process. This is ideal of announcements or latest news. It also allows one to attach a photo in the post making it easier to enhance the value of the posts.

Parley

Parley.io is an application similar to Reddit. Since it is rather new, it gets little attention. It is also a bare bones platform at this time. That said, Reddit has 250M users and a ton of commenting. People talk about quality content on Steemit yet we average just over 2 comments per post. If the content is of such quality, why is nobody talking about it?

Also, Reddit had huge success become the place where millions go for their daily information. Dubbing itself the "Front page of the Internet", this site enables people to find the news items that interest them. Steemit is looking to shift in this direction with communities yet we already have an application that does this to a degree.

Steemhunt

Steemhunt is one of the new applications on the STEEM blockchain. This is for those who like gadgets and other new items. I am not too familiar with it although I did play around with it some. It does not take long to post a new item with a brief description. Obviously, finding new, interesting stuff could take some time but those who are bouncing around the Internet will come across things like that quite often. When one does, it is not hard to jump to steemhunt.com and post it.

These are all legitimate applications that anables user to create content. None of them are spamming. Also, there is nothing that says 3-4 posts a day have to be blog posts using Steemit or Busy. All these applications exist on the STEEM blockchain to provide value to the users. They also, from what I can see, can use the support from the community.

Anyone who looks at the numbers pertaining to the activity on this blockchain knows that it is slowing down. Whether it is the token price or whatever, people are not as engaged as before. While I do not want to see this site flooded with just junk, we do need activity. This challenge provides that. Yes people should put together posts that are interesting, informative, and engaging. However, what that is varies greatly. There are 1M user accounts with an estimates 250K who visit here regularly. What interests people varies.

This entire concept was stimulated by @timcliff's post about use taking responsibility for having an active role here. Activity is key. Some worry about the content yet is the possibility of a few sub-par posts any worse than a post that is full of complaints (or worse, a comment section)?

Is this going to magically fix all the problems of the STEEM blockchain? Of course not. There are still issues that warrant discussion and, most likely, some type of change. Nevertheless, the system that is in place right now is what we have to deal with. The reward pool pays out 75% to content creators. It is time that those who feel the system tilted to take a larger portion for themselves.

It is time for those to treat STEEM as an opportunity and use it to amass a bit more SP. Collectively, 10K accounts have a great deal of power to spread among themselves. And, from some of the replies, there are accounts bigger than Minnows/Planktons who will support with some upvotes.

So do you want to take an active role in having an impact on the STEEM blockchain? If so, the month of July might just be the chance.

If you found this article informative, please give it an upvote and resteem.

Transaction demand is what will make the platform grow. You're on the right track, Taskmaster. And you've hammer all of the nails for interfaces to use, too.

Count me in! I Completely agree on using those other platforms build on the steem blockchain to create content. I have embraced a couple, namely, @dtube @steemhunt @dlive @steepshot @partiko @dmania and I am completely loving it.
Thank you for this post.

@taskmaster4450, missed the post yesterday, but it would be great to see the red fishes and minnows would support each other! Most of them of all fishing in the same ocean for the same dolphins, orcas or whales! In the mean time, just neglecting each other!
I do try to write 2 posts a day, which I do consider my max! I am just not so creative I do guess. I am amazed that you and for instance @tarazkp can write 4 decent posts a day! Really impressive!
I do think that the problem is that lots of us, do earn more money with commenting than with writing own posts! So the easiest way to grow your account is just to comment. But I do think that posting and commenting do need each other.
A great author, who only post and doesn't comment will have it hard to get noticed. So the value of the post will be below par and maybe even 0!
Another steemians, who is a great and genuine commenter can write 20 to 30 comments per day, hence raking in more steem, than the great author. But nobody is willing to follow him, because he has no own content!
That's why I do focus on both. Trying to write my post and write some genuine comments.
People do need to understand that when the price of Steem is low, the reward pool is still the same! It also is a lot easier to get noticed these days!
So I do hope to see a lot of new postings, but these persons don't forget to read each others posts and comment on them!

Cheers,
Peter

Interesting write up...I believe if Steemit just became more like Facebook, (especially with User Interface), then this exact scenario would pan out. I have written daily since being on almost 2 years... but it is no easy task... because of the so called “Quality Content”.... people do not read, they quip to and fro and why Facebook is so popular... that and the built in messenger and other quich, easy, dumbed down interface. We need that here, Google will take care of the need for info. One exception would be new tech and crypto developments.

Just checked your page out. It was boring. You need to increase excitement in your post if you want better result!

Well gee thanks for the info.

I didnt know that Parley exists. This is very new to be. It is really amazing how this platform is growing. Well I love your strategy of writing 3 to 4 posts, but believe me there is no guarantee of getting an upvote. Mostly for the new users. They can write a very long and helpful post or a short spammy post and get the same result. I am telling this from my own experience.
There are many users who earn more through comments than writing posts, because nobody reads their blogs, but their comments.

That is true...commenting is a great way to earn some money and something that I always recommend. This is really a worthy approach if one is posting on the article written by some of the larger accounts who have a good following.

Comments are part of the author pool so that qualifies. That said, we do only see slightly over 2 comments per post for the entire site so I hypothesize there isnt a ton of commenting going on, overall.

If Minnows and Dolphins post en masse, along with focusing their upvotes upon each other, it will form a collective voting pool. This block has tremendous power if people come together.

I think this is certainly pointing in the right direction. My only concern is that I don't like to post fluff articles, such as just one photo. It is also already hard to weed out quality given all the noise and paid to boost posts. Won't posting a lot more make it even harder? I'm new and have little vote value, but as a member of #steemitbloggers I try to vote for others as much as possible, including new users. I've largely given up timing my vote, since it matters little. Instead I try to vote up posts that I find to be of high quality, when I find them. I also try to comment if I can add something constructive and even upvote good comments. That should be how we are all voting, but the economic rules are really set up incorrectly to encourage the right behavior. The only "gaming" I do is to upvote my own post (but only if I think it is decent quality) and sometimes use @minnowbooster and @minnowsupport. For me these help just a little, but I need all the help I can get here.

I'm using Zappl and Parlay right now...

I did use Steepshot a few days and it seems like a good tool.

But ¡hey! you forgot DTube and Fundition. Some of the amazing tools for Steem rewards...

Be it what it be, it will be a great experiment to see how it impacts the blockchain and its users on Steemit. I think it will also catch the attention of the whales so that they can see how much potential is here with the large majority of smaller users.

Hi @taskmaster4450
As more people onboard onto the STEEM platform, wouldn't there be less reward available from the daily reward pool? Wouldn't this encourage more selfish behavior on the platform? Can you help me understand the age of abundance in this context please?

Yes the reward pool will be diluted as more people sign on. I expect Steemit to bring out a SMT with account based voting meaning that there will be opportunity for rewards. There will also be SMTs like Hunt that will reward people.

Three are going to be a ton tokens on this blockchain....people are going to be earning in all kinds of ways.

Those who have STEEM already, in my view, are going to be sitting pretty.

Posting 3-4 times a day for a month sounds a bit challenging so I understand why some minnows and red fish don't know if they can do it. I think with the right plan it gets easier and since July doesn't start tomorrow (or next week even) we can all start planning from now to increase our chances of success. And if we really want to see change we owe it to ourselves to make the effort. I'm in.
