We Need More Development On STEEM!

I have to complain...I just do!

People, I like STEEM, I really do! It's the blockchain that I most use! It has the best community around crypto! We are a family! Sometimes we do have a hate-love relation with some of the other Steemians, but in the end we are family... But STEEM has a problem...

STEEM lacks fast development! STEEM lacks devs and programmers! STEEM lacks dapps developers! STEEM lacks 24/7 workers, pushing the whole project forward! Yes, I know we have a few good devs, programmers, dapps makers, but they aren't enough!

Steemians are happy that STEEM has a game like MagicDice...Ok, I get it! I'm also happy that STEEM has a casino-like game! But my fellow Steemians, STEEM is 3 years old! Why did it take so freaking long to get a casino-like game! Why don't more devs come to this blockchain!? How can we attract new developers?! How can we attract more people to build our ecosystem!? What are we doing wrong that the other blockchains are doing right?! Because some of the other blockchains have a huge amount of developers!

EOS, for example, as soon as it came out they started developing the ledger wallet and trezor wallet...STEEM still has none of these that I know about! EOS came out with a massive amount of casino-like games months after mainnet launch...It took 3 years for STEEM to give birth to one of these! STEEM is finally doing a work proposal system to further the development of dapps and STEEM in general, EOS has a 4B war-chest fund to do this!

I'm not trying to shill EOS or fud STEEM, what I want is for people to understand that the development that STEEM is having right now is still slow, it isn't normal! We, as the STEEM community need to realize why this blockchain isn't, at the moment, as attractive as the likes of EOS or ETH... We need to realize what we are doing wrong and fix it!

STEEM has the best community in crypto! Any dapps that gets developed on STEEM automatically gets a massive boost of users! Just look at drugwars, a few days after it came out it was in the top 10 of the most used dapps! Why aren't people more interested in this blockchain?

I think the SPS will fix this big time! Give incentive to new developers to come to STEEM! Because, let's be real...if another blockchain gives a 10.000$ incentive to develop in it, and STEEM gives 0$, why would people come here? Just because of the community? Well, yes, but both ETH and EOS have strong communities, maybe they wouldn't get as much marketing as they would get on STEEM, but 10.000$ is 10.000$! With that amount of money they can fund the project for months!

Maybe we can start doing more STEEM hackathons?!

Again, I'm going to compare STEEM with EOS... on EOS I'm always watching hackathons, the block producers are always moving around going from hackathons to hackathon... On STEEM we have some, but not as many as we should have!

In my opinion, each country's community should be responsible for encouraging hackathons and the further development of STEEM inside their own countries! Maybe communities like @cervantes, @greek-trail, @steemitportugal could do a weekly "fund me" hackathon post, where they would try to reach a goal of a certain $ and, when that goal is reached, they would get a hackathon going in their country!

Maybe it would take months before some of the communities reach their "goal", some will probably only reach it in the next bull market! But it's better late than never!

Just imagine, if 10 communities did this and if each hackathon would attract 10 developers because of the prizes, that would be 100 developers that got introduced to STEEM around the world! Even if only 10% of those stays, we would still get 10 new developers! Ten new possible SteemMonsters! Ten new possible dtubes! How incredible would that be!!

I can see some problems with this, and this whole idea would need to be better studied... for example:

What if there are no good developers on each country to analyze and teach the projects?

Maybe top developers and witnesses from the Steemian community could travel around, from country to country and solve this...but that would require extra $! So, it would require extra time!

What about the price of STEEM, wouldn't it be better to wait for the top of the next bubble to cash out that hackathon money?

Yes, it would, but that would require a trader to spot the top... and it would require someone to trade that money in order to not sell at a false top! Or maybe we could use a platform like NEXO, where we can use crypto as collateral to get a loan! So, we could use STEEM as collateral and if it went up by a lot we could pay the loan with that same STEEM!

And what would the communities gain by doing this?

Yes, more developers means more dapps, which means more use cases and an increase in STEEM price, but that's not something touchable! Should the different communities keep some of the money? Or maybe just the publicity they get is their reward?

In my opinion, we should start working on this...it might take a while for the bull market to come, but if we start now, each community would have a lot of money to work with when the next bubble comes around! We would see something that in this bubble we didn't see very much... a BOOM of development on STEEM!

BOOOOM!

Question of the day: Do you have any more ideas on how to bring more developers to STEEM?

I agree. one of the major problems we have on Steem is the lack of development on here. Of course, over the past few months, a lot have changed and we've seen more people working on developing things. But, we could be better. Way better.

One of the problems with getting more dapps on Steem at the moment is the lack of tokens. For so long, some initiatives have had to work without a good means of incentivizing their users and it's slowed down their adoption and progress. And Judging by how easy it was for @shredz7 to build a side chain (state of steem) and then build a dapp Stratos for communities, it's very correct to say our biggest stakeholder and developer company Steemit is incompetent through and through. How do you develop a fine technology such as Steem and then sunset it at its peak? It's been over 2 years and a team of over 12 programmers couldn't figure out how to give the chain tokens and yet someone singlehandedly did it in a few months. Today, through State of Steem, we've been able to build tokens with Steem Engine, which is awesome. i hope more developments can kick off from there.

Still is no match for a place like EOS even though we've got a great community going. Like you've said, we need Hackathons and reward incentives to attract more top developer teams here. And the ways i see that happening is either if

  • Independent communities fund them;
  • Witnesses come together fund them;
  • Steemit Inc fund them (like Block.one did at the start).

However, i do not advocate for dependence on Steemit inc. For me, they do not seem to think long-term enough to want to throw money around for that. So, i do hope the other two options are good enough (there could be better options though).

In all, i do see a beacon of hope for the chain with Steem Alliance (which i think is too slow and without clear purposes or form yet), @shredz7's State of Steem, Stratos for communities (@stratos), Steem Engine, and the SPS being developed by @blocktrades. And i hope with these things in place, more useful developments start popping up. I also hope i can join in developing for the chain too. Someday!

My opinions.

I'm 100% with you, couldn't have said it better, especially the part:

it's very correct to say our biggest stakeholder and developer company Steemit is incompetent through and through.

Steemit.inc didn't do anything during a whole bull market and the beggining of a bear market! The best time to attract new developers and new users is during a bull market and early bear market! And Steemit.inc wasted this opportunity away... They also lack in communication!

Things are improving, and ned is starting to get more involved, better late then never I guess...To be completely honest I've lost all hope for steemit.inc, and look up to our witnesses to further the STEEM development!

Thanks for reading @pangoli! you always provide the best comments on the blockchain :P

Thanks for talking about my projects! I have a very similar version for the future of Steem and as soon as I am done with Stratos communities will start work on Spire: a very simple and easy way to launch Steem sidechains on a determined protocol by simply creating a transaction! I definitely hope to get some hackathons set up for Steem sidechains as soon as I have these tools set up - so be on the lookout!

You and @aggroed should probably work for steemit.inc, damn, take over for dan, he delayed SMT time and time again, and u both came up with a sort of token system without the amount of resources steemit.inc has! Imagine if you had their resources!

Hackathons are a must imo to bring more developers to STEEM, we really need them, in order to surpass all the other blockchains in development! We have a really strong community! A community that makes any dapp go to the top of the statistics with activity! We just need more dapps, more developers, better tech, better programming! Hackathons will further the STEEM development really fast imo!

Yeah definitely! I’m really wanting to get Spire out by the end of summer, maybe even by June... but a lot of help from the community is needed to get it done (maybe from Steemit Inc too) - a larger dev community would be really beneficial to Steem.

I can’t wait to be hosting hackathons and having dozens of new DApps on Steem!

Finally a logical pro SPS argument. I may have to rethink some things, really glad to know some people with a good grasp and clarity of mind find merit in it. So far I did not really, maybe based on an inaccurate perception of what Steem needs and a certain sense of fear for further slacking away its original headstart by further compounding centralization through starting to solve the low priority problems at the cost of everyone.

Will read more of your take on this, thanks for the great article!

Thanks for the follow! Yeah, most people are annoyed with SPS because it will either be based on donations or a chunk of the inflation, but I look at it as I look at taxes:

  1. I don't count with that money

  2. I'm happy to pay taxes if they are used THE RIGHT WAY, without taxes we wouldn't have education, police, running water, electricity, etc...

People don't get it that the SPS will, in the end, make the whole ecosystem better which will further increase the STEEM price because of increased demand for it! People only hear "They will take a portion of ur rewards" and get all mad about it...

And I think the better system is the remove a % of the inflation from (curators, witnesses, authors), because at least we would know how much $ the SPS would have and we could make future plans for it... while a donation based system would be very inconsistent, we would never be able to predict how much $ the SPS would be making, and it would be harder to make future plans and future incentives to devs,etc...

But again, if we do go with the inflation system it needs to come out of everyone's pockets... witnesses, curators and authors alike!

But this is just my opinion ofc...

I fear this development of the proposal system will turn into a permanent thing whether it is actually needed or not, hope I am wrong.
I'd be much in favor of everyone paying their share if it is indeed needed at all, instead of some arbitrary group shouldering it all by themselves.

Seeing how many awesome dapps have been developed all without any centralized funding places - let alone coercive obligation to fund that development - and then seeing how little stinc has accomplished over a much longer period (as @pangoli has so eloquently pointed out) leads me to question whether a proposal system is what would improve this place considering the unchanged and unadressed permance of bidbots and trash in the trending page. I often feel like priorities are not made for the ebenfit of the platform but for the benefit of some well-positioned people on the platform though I certainly hope that is not correct.
Time will tell^^

Excellent article, @teutonium. You have very good ideas... even if some are completely unpractical at the moment. I think our portuguese community account doesn't make enough money in a year to pay a dinner for 2 at MacDonalds, let alone to fund a Hackaton!

We have many miles to go... Let's just hope the runners don't give up before the race is over.

Yeah, that is why I put greek-trail and cervantes up there, both of those have the resources to make hackathons... and steemitportugal will soon make more money, we just need to get our "shit" straight, we need more posts, we need more delegations, we need more of everything! And also, you need to see that these posts would be financed by the whole community! I can see whales voting on all the different communities in order for them to get the $ to do the hackathons! And if we had a central account to resteem all of these community fund gathering posts even better, it would make it so with just 1 follow we would know every community!
