Age of Wonders very promising turn strategy

Age of Wonders: Planetfall is the fifth installment of the turn-based strategy videogame series developed by Triumph Studios. It will be available from today August 6 with distribution by Paradox Interactive for PC-Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms.

Age of Wonders is a series very well valued by critics and appreciated by lovers of strategy games. Personally, it has occupied a preferential place in my PCs since at the end of the last century a Dutch studio not too well known pleasantly surprised with an original game that drank from the sources of the great Heroes of Might and Magic, Master of Orion and no less Mythical Master of Magic, one of the great precursors of turn-based strategy with others such as Civilization of the genius Sid Meier.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall offers several game modes, single player campaign, scenarios or multiplayer. The campaign will surely be the starting point for all new players. For starters, it offers four planets to choose from, including one by way of the game tutorial that we recommend you do. The campaign is proposed by phases and objective fulfillment (type Starcraft II) and it is necessary to complete the required ones in the first three planets to unlock the following and the rest of the factions. It offers several difficulty modes from a "beginner" very simple to perform to an "expert" where Artificial Intelligence gets quite hard.

To build our empire in any game mode, we will have six exclusive factions available. From the «Vanguard» humans to the «Assembly» cybergs, through the «Kir’Ko» alien insects, each of them are very different, have their advantages and weaknesses and allow us to focus on a specific game mode. Each one has a secret technology to use; different units are human, biological, robotic or psionic; Different weaponry for one of them and a lot of commanders to lead the troops (more than 50 including the principal acting as head of the faction), each with their own abilities as we will see in the combat section and highly customizable from the game start

The interface is well resolved. Although it offers a large number of buttons and can overwhelm at the beginning all that remains to be done, it allows access to all its sections at the click of a mouse and includes the usual linked keys such as quick access. A wide zoom allows you to approach a very detailed, visually rich and colorful strategic general map, which has an additional mini-map. At the other end of the zoom, it offers an overview of the customizable situation in three main sections: military, economy and operations.

The sectors can become colonies and from them annex those that are contiguous to one or two sectors away. Each colony can annex a maximum of sectors depending on their level or turn them into bases without benefits of resources, but of visibility on the map, alert and defense before the other races.

Colonies and sectors are those that provide us with most of the game's resources, although they can also be collected by exploring sites such as ruins scattered throughout the map. Energy is the universal resource of the game since it is needed to produce and maintain the units and structures of the colonies, while the "Cosmita" is the advanced resource necessary for the most advanced units and special modifications.

To give you an idea, I have played it with 1 team. With 2K resolution on a desktop with a Radeon RX 580 graphics and an Intel Core i7 6700K processor. They use PCIe solid state drive, 32-16 Gbytes of DDR4 memory and Windows 10 64-bit updated to the latest 1903 version.

With the hardware I have not had any problem to play it - almost the highest quality, both on the main map and in combat mode. The graphics integrated in the processor, Intel HD Graphics 530. It is not a type of game that needs the level of a shooter and, in addition, we have found it quite polished without appreciable errors in any of its sections.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall It is a good restart of a series that has not obtained a massive level of sales, but very good reviews and fun for those who have followed it. At Planetfall, we lose the "magic" of the fantasy world of the previous ones, but we jump into a space science fiction universe with all its possibilities. I do not quite understand in depth the history that we propose or rather its complex development, but it is compensated with the great playability offered by its game modes and the different acting styles that allow each of the factions.
