Let's listen when God calls us!

1 Kings 19:9-15

9 And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?
10 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
14 And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.
15 And the Lord said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.

Dear friends

This is also a very significant episode. Elijah, pursued by the hatred of Queen Jezebel, flees into the desert. Fed by the bread that the angel gives him, he arrives, after forty days of walking, to the Mount of God, Horeb.

Here to read these scriptures is like going back to the past, re-connect with the roots of the people. The elements of nature unleashed-hurricane, earthquake, fire-are the usual companions of the presence of God (Ex.19,16), (Psalm 50,3; 97,3).

Thus, nature represents above all the power and magnificence of the Lord. Elijah, however, perceives the Lord in the gentle passage of the breeze, as if expressing the peace that arises in the spirit of the prophet, so violently persecuted so far.

From that moment, the prophet initiates a new activity, anoints King of Israel to Jehu and designates his own successor, Elisha. In addition, the concept of "the rest of Israel" is born, those 7,000 who have not bowed their knees before the Baals, those who remain faithful to the Lord in the midst of the general apostasy.

It presents us with a return to the origins of Israel, fidelity to God, to the Covenant. And an announcement that only a minority of the people will be the true heir. Understood in this way, it has a strong consonance with the Gospel text, which presents Jesus as the fulfillment of the Promise, accepted by the few and rejected by the majority (Mark 6: 1-6), (Matthew 13: 54-58) and (Luke 4: 16-30)

Do we listen attentively to the tenuous voice of God? Or are we often distracted by the problems that come with our attention?

Let us ask the heavenly Father to attenuate the noise, so that we can learn to detect its soft whisper capable of transforming our lives.
