UNDERSTANDING GOD'S WORD
In order to fully understand God's word ( the Bible), there are certain requirements that you must meet and yield to as well. The bible is a spiritual book, and it must be spiritually discerned. Now the natural man received not the things of the spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually examined. (1Cor. 2:14).
Today, I will be discussing on two requirement areas which are the Spiritual and Intellectual.
( A) The Spiritual requirements for a clear understanding of the Word of God are as follows:
One must love God: Loving God is a prerequisite to understanding His words. In the first place, if you do not love Him, you will not even take out the time to dwell and study His words. Understanding only comes in the place of studying. So, dearly believed, love God for it is our whole duty.
One must be willing to do God's will: The moment you determine to do the will of God, God will give you the understanding of His word.
You must be willing to lay aside human theories and practices of men which are contrary to the will of God: Like it was earlier stated, the word of God is spiritual and it only takes a spirit filled man to understand and discern it meanings. For understanding to be ours, we must do away with what we know and present ourselves empty to God. Lean not on your own understanding.
One must pray to the Lord: Whatever you need can be obtained on the platform of prayers. If you lack understanding of His words, do well to pray to God asking for Him to give you the understanding of His words.
One must obey the truth that is already known
You must desire to know the truth as found in God's word: One other important thing is you desiring to know God's word. When God sees how you desire to know Him and His words, He will surely grant and give you understanding.
One must be doer of the word.
One must desire to grow.
One must learn and keep Christ's commandments.
One must take heed both to the doctrine and himself.
-One must be born again: This is the root of thematter. Except you are born anew, you can never understand the Word of God indepthly.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
(B) The Intellectual Requirements:
- To fully understand God's word, one must know and have it at the back of his or her mind that Bible Study is a hard work. You must study the word in order to get its message.
- Realize that understanding is a gift from the Lord and that you need to prepare and be ready to receive understanding from Him.
- One must discipline one's mind to memorize the word.
Psalms 119:11 Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
- One must also worship the Lord with all of his heart.
It would be realized that biblical truths are not found elsewhere than in the very scripture itself. It would be inconsequential for Christians to stay without being devoted to the study of the scriptures for they are the source of life and they testify of Christ. Therefore, there is great need to give indepth study and attention to the word of God to avoid being misled into grievious errors.
