Esther becomes queen
2 When the anger had passed, Xerxes began to think of Vashti and what she had done, and also of the decree which he had signed. 2 So his personal assistants suggested the following: "Let us search the whole empire for beautiful young women and virgins for the king. 3 Let the king appoint delegates in every province, that they may gather together these fair young women into the royal harem at Shushan fortress. Hegai, the king's eunuch in charge of the harem, will see to it that they all receive beauty treatments. 4 Then shall the young woman that pleaseth the king most be queen instead of Vashti. The king thought that was very good advice, so he decided to put it into practice.
5 In those days there was a certain Jew in Shushan fortress named Mordecai the son of Jair. He belonged to the tribe of Benjamin and was a descendant of Kish and Shimei. 6 His family had been among those who, with Jehoiachin,[b] king of Judah, were banished from Jerusalem, and brought to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar the king. 7 Mordecai had a very beautiful and attractive young cousin named Hadassah, who was also called Esther. When her father and mother died, Mordecai adopted her, integrated her into his family and raised her as his own daughter.
8 And as a result of the king's decree, Esther, and many other young women, were brought into the king's harem at Shushan fortress, and brought into the care of Hegai. 9 Hegai was very impressed with Esther and treated her very kindly. He immediately ordered a special diet and beauty treatments. He also assigned seven specially chosen maidens from the king's palace to him and took her and them to the best place in the harem.
