STEEMCHURCH - FIFTH COMMANDMENT - Honor your father and your mother

in #steemchurch6 years ago

A warm greeting Dear friends and brothers
Welcome to my blog
God bless you!

Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may lengthen in the land that the Lord your God gives you.
Exodus 20:12

This fifth commandment marks the beginning of a series of six commandments that show us how to love other people starting from our earliest years in the family.

In a way, the fifth commandment connects the two sections, since God reveals Himself as our loving Father. No father deserves as much honor as our Heavenly Father! Yet the Bible shows that humanity, and even those chosen to be the people of God, have often failed to show that honor and respect to our Creator God.

God pointed to this problem so common in Malachi 1: 6: "The son honors the father, and the servant his lord. If, then, I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a lord, where is my fear? "

This fifth commandment helps us see how learning respect and honor in the family environment helps us prepare to show honor to our great Heavenly Father.

But what does it mean to honor? First of all respect, recognize those who gave us life, with more reason if they raised us, took care of us, supported us and advised us until adulthood.

This commandment invites us to recognize the unique place that our fathers occupy in our existence. All this confers a moral weight, a value, that must produce respect and gratitude in the children, even if the parents did not always live up to their function, or if, perhaps, they do not deserve this respect.

It is an attitude of the heart that translates into concrete words and actions: obedience when we are children, respect throughout their lives, help and care when our parents are older.

The honor should not end when we leave home

--
The family is a lifelong commitment; It reflects the permanence of the family relationship to which we have been called, by becoming children of God. As the apostle John wrote, "See what love the Father has given us, that we may be called sons of God" (1 John 3: 1).

God intends for us to continue to show respect and honor to our parents even after leaving home and perhaps even more as they get older and may require help and care. Jesus Christ showed the hypocrisy of some who tried to dodge their responsibility to honor and support their elderly parents:

"Why do you also break the commandment of God for your tradition? Because God sent saying: Honor your father and your mother; and: He who curses the father or the mother, dies irretrievably. But you say: Anyone who says to his father or his mother: It is my offering to God whatever I can help you with, no longer honoring his father or his mother. Thus you have invalidated the commandment of God for your tradition "(Matthew 15: 3-6).

God wants us to honor and respect our parents throughout our lives.

CONCLUSION

--
Honoring our parents does not mean thinking that everything they did was fine. In order to truly honor our parents, if they made mistakes, we must first forgive them. God gives us this strength of forgiveness when we ask for it. Regardless of their behavior, do not despise our parents, respect them and love them, especially in their old age!

This commandment does not exempt parents from watching out in order to have a just and caring attitude that encourages children and motivates them to love and honor their parents (Colossians 3:21).

Honoring parents involves high esteem, reverence and help. It means being there to look after them, take care of them. Compared to the other commandments, where no specific promise is directly attached, God, in giving this commandment also added a certain promise. He said: "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may lengthen in the land that the Lord your God gives you." But it did not end there. In Deuteronomy 5:16 the same commandment comes but with an additional promise attached:

Deuteronomy 5:16
"Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you."

Good reflection @mosdad, if we want to have long life, this must be one of our actions, honor our parents

Being a father is not an easy task, it is full of challenges and responsibilities, only when we become parents do we understand the amount of efforts that our people do for us, that is why honoring and respecting them is synonymous with obedience and respect and It summarizes in directly obeying God as God and supreme father of all. Blessings brother.

Thank you dear brother for teaching revealing details of each commandment.
