The day of Pentecost... And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting; and there appeared to them tongues divided as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Some days had passed since the Lord's ascension into heaven. His promise, which was also the promise of the Father, was to be fulfilled (ch. 1:4). The Holy Spirit, a divine person, descended to earth in the form of "cloven tongues, as of fire," settling on the disciples.

Their power was immediately manifested in them: they were able to express themselves in languages they did not know. In His grace, God remedied the curse of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9) and confirmed to all that the divine blessing would extend to the whole earth.

Each year, the Jewish feast of Pentecost brought to Jerusalem a considerable multitude of Israelites scattered among the nations. This affluence led to the first great meeting of evangelization. Yet how much astonishment to that multitude! Each one could hear in his own tongue "the wonders of God. Those who spoke to them were "Galileans" without instruction (Acts 4:13; John 7:15).

You don't have to be part of a select class, or have done certain studies, to be a worker of the Lord. To depend upon Him and to be submissive to the action of His Spirit are the only conditions required. May each of us desire to respond to it!
