Shortly before being arrested and crucified, the Lord Jesus instituted the Supper, the feast in memory of him: the bread and the cup. He explained to his disciples the meaning of the cup: "This is my blood ... which is shed for many for the remission of sins" (Matthew 26:28), that is, for sins to be forgiven and taken away. So that his people do not forget him, Jesus left them a concrete and visible sign that will remind them of his death.

Formerly the Israelites sacrificed many animals for their religious service. But the Epistle to the Hebrews explains to us that "in these sacrifices every year remembrance of sins is made; for the blood of bulls and goats can not take away sins "(Hebrews 10: 3-4). These offerings announced the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and his blood shed on the cross, the basis of our salvation. Without the shedding of that blood there could be no forgiveness for sinful man (Hebrews 9:22).

The apostles Peter and Paul insisted that salvation depends on the blood of Jesus Christ, on his death. "You were rescued ... not with corruptible things, like gold or silver, but with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1: 18-19). Yes, in Christ "we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins" (Ephesians 1: 7). "God shows his love for us, in that while we are still sinners, Christ died for us. For much more, being already justified in his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him "(Romans 5: 8-9).
