Luke 22:28
Jesus uttered this phrase after hearing a strong discussion among his disciples. He knew their faithfulness, despite their weaknesses and sometimes their faults.
"You have remained," that is, you did not flee. This is a word of approval. When the trial pushes us back and discourages us, Jesus encourages us to stand firm and patient in our faith.
"My trials," Jesus said. What were Jesus' trials? At that time it was the hatred, the contempt of those who rejected him. Even today we find the same hostility, which manifests itself in various ways: violence, persecution, mockery, indifference... In our day, to share the trials of Jesus is to share also those of his witnesses on earth, just as the apostle Paul spoke of the sufferings of Christ that he was going to suffer in his service for the Church (Colossians 1:24). Many of the sufferings of believers are united with those of their brothers and sisters in faith. We think of them, pray for them and feel their sorrows immensely.
"With me in my trials. By saying "with me", Jesus underlines a very strong personal affective bond. He also shows much grace, because he does not mention our errors. We endure these trials by faith, united to him, loving him. Certainly we would be filled with joy if, at the end of our life, the Lord told us: You have been "with me" in my trials.
