Steem Film School - Camera Basics (Exposure)

Today I'll talk about the basics of camera work, about exposure in specific.

Exposure is the amount of light your camera processes. How bright or dark your image is. How well "exposed" your image is.

If it's underexposed it means the image it's too dark. If it's overexposed it means the image it's too bright.

You need to pay attention to the shadows, mid-tones and highlights since they can be differently exposed. For example, your image can look good on the monitor but the shadows can be too dark (underexposed) and it will show on the picture.

I'll just remind you that htis is minaly for film cameras.

When expusing your image you need to consider four things.

Let's have a look.

Frame Rate:

• If you film at very high frame rate you will need higher ISO and pump more light.
• The higher the frame rate the less light the camera gets.

ISO:

• Low - less light
• High - More light
• The higher the more noise in your image
• Cameras sometimes have a native ISO
• You can stick to the same ISO for a project or scene. Since it affects a bit the colours.

Shutter Speed:

• Always double than the frame rate. Eg: 25 Fps - Shutter Speed 50
• Higher shutter makes movement different. Eg: Action scenes.
• Higher shutter also makes the image crisper
• Usually you leave it at the standard 50 for the whole project

Aperture / F- Stop:

• It affects the amount of light and the focus range.
• The higher the number (And smaller the hole) - The less amount of light can come in.
• Higher number the more in focus everything is.
• Smaller number - more light and more focus contrast.
