Every morning when the day is about to rise a phenomenon known as dawn chorus happens. The dawn chorus consists of a harmonious sound wave composed by the singing of all the birds. Who ever had the pleasure of listening to this phenomenon with full attention knows this is a magical moment that brings a sensation of deep relaxation.

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History and The Innovation Studio gathered efforts to develop this alarm app that simulates the beautiful chorus that birds make every dawn. You can choose from 20 native birds from North America to create a custom alarm song up to 5 birds, and simultaneously learn more about each bird species.

    Thanks for finding this @arcanu...

    I haven't downloaded this application yet as I am in the UK and need to check how transferrable it is.

    Pros :

    • it's free
    • ideal for people who want are keen on bird songs or want to learn further.
    • educational use as it will make you aware of names of birds and how they actually sound like.
    • talking point if someone else hears it - we used to have a wall clock with bird songs and the joke was : 'it's nearly owl time' or midnight...
    • possibly less stressful to wake up to a bird song than an alarm bell.

    Cons:

    • dubious as to whether a bird song will wake my people up. I'd have to test it fully but currently at home no alarm wakes anybody up...
    • is it a seasonal thing ? At home in Wales, we only get the dawn chorus springtime... Will it therefore 'upset my bioclock' if I hear it in the autumn?
    • not clear re annoyance factor could it become ? In my experience, that sort of app can become too repetitive thus losing efficacy.

    Same here, it's tough to find alarms that work. Actually I just downloaded the app yesterday, set the alarm, but I woke up before it ringed, so I still don´t know if it works with me. You got me thinking about the bioclock...
