Don't Have To Wake Up Feeling Tired Anymore

Have you ever had those days where you wake up by your alarm in the middle of your sweetest dream? Alternatively, you’re feeling exhausted to get ready for the hectic day that lies ahead of you. Well, it’s not just you. But, me too!

To curb this problem, I come across this interesting app that claims to fix it all for you and me. Apparently, according to the scientist’s studies, to have a good sleep isn’t just about the duration of your sleep. But, the timing you’re waking up matters too.

Sleep Cycle alarm clock is not your typical alarm clock on your iPhone or the actual alarm clock that lay on top of your table drawer. This is an application that acts as an alarm clock with the unique function to help you wake up by feeling freshen and rejuvenated.

So the question is, how does it work?

This might sound sophisticated, but hear me out. It’s simple and reasonable to understand. Sleep cycle tracks your sleeping patterns and wakes you up specifically during your light sleep. It is proven by the scientist that waking up during your light sleep is equivalent to you waking up naturally with no disturbance.

To prove this application works, we have to understand what our body encounter when we are asleep. At this phase AKA the sleep cycles, we go through 5 stages of sleep in a cycling motion that lasts about 90 minutes per cycle. Each cycle is then repeated several times throughout the duration of your sleep.

Starting we enter the first stage of the cycle where we are having a light sleep. It is then followed by slow sleep and deep sleep. These stages of sleep are called the non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. When we are in deep sleep, it is the hardest stage for someone to wake up from sleep and it’s the most tiring state to be awakened. This is because our eye muscle is in a resting state where little or no movement of muscle occurs at this stage.
At the final stage, which is the dream sleep AKA rapid-eye-movement (REM) stage, our eyes move the most throughout the cycle. Thus, most dreams that occur at this stage are being said to be visual images from the eye movements.

After understanding the sleep cycles, now we are down to the real business. The ‘Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock’ uses a sound analysis to identify our sleep states by tracking our movement in bed.

Sleep Cycle analyze your sleeping pattern in a graph to determine whether you’re at an optimum sleeping graph. Irregular graphs can show that you are disturbed by a certain factor that disrupted your sleep. For example, if you’re under the influence of alcohol, you are able to fall asleep faster but you’re more likely to have more a deeper sleep at the beginning and light sleep throughout the night. This causes your body to detect you to be in an awakening mode throughout the night. Thus, the next day when you’re awake, you more likely to feel exhausted than refreshed.

In order for Sleep cycle to effectively track down your sleep pattern, you are required to place your phone as close to you as possible. The detect modes in Sleep Cycle will analyze your movements via your phone's built-in microphone. The detected sound is transmitted to be an accelerometer to track your body movement during sleep.

After recording the movement, Sleep Cycle uses an intelligent analysis to wake you up within 30 minutes of your set alarm. The alarm will monitor the signals from your body to wake you softly with light music. At this stage, you're at the lightest sleep state. When you're being awaken by this stage, you're more likely to feel more fresh than tired. Thus, this generalized how sleep cycle works.

Isn't it counterproductive though, because sleeping next to electronic devices supposedly disturbs your sleep? 🤔

I tried it. I also found that if you put your phone in flight mode, the radiation is significantly reduced and also you won't be receiving any messages in the middle of your sleep. It is really interesting to find out your sleeping pattern and I definitely felt more refresh when I'm being awakened by light sleep.

I read about this before but the app didn't actually work for me. Thank you for sharing though!
