The Witnesses are really important to the Steem ecosystem, and while they accomplish the important task of producing the blocks and processing all the transactions on the Steem blockchain, they also make a lot of money for doing so.
Since they are making so much money (potentially $500,000 USD a year) we also expect that they are contributing a lot to the platform... they should earn their place in the Top 20.
The votes for witness are stake-based, which means some users have way more power than other users in deciding who the Top 20 witnesses are going to be... what this also means is that witnesses could potentially collude to keep each other and their friends in the Top 20, even if they're not contributing to Planet Steem.
Witness @asbear has set up a healthcheck system so that we gain a little more insight on how the witnesses are doing and who they are voting for.

I was not aware of the exponential voting count for the witnesses , thanks for informing us , just checked the website , it gives us immense knowledge about who is working for the community and who is abusing.

Great work by @asbear and great work by yourself bringing this to my attention. It is vital that we keep up to date on what the witnesses are doing as they are vital for the future of the platform and also need to be held accountable
