You're absolutely right; it's not a smooth process. As a user, I'd be discouraged, I don't think I'd vote or comment there.
I'd not mind if there was a way to automatically convert links and I also wouldn't mind if users were given a choice to select which site they want to visit.
AFAIK, changing the behavior while keeping the original URL would be easy to implement in an app but difficult in a browser.
I don't know much about it, but I believe if there are people working on it, sooner or later they will find a solution to this.
