Most people aren't accustomed to thinking in terms of rewards/benefits with social media. They show up, post their cat memes, and have fun. Steemit is about more than just engaging in cool peeps. You do have to think about resources.

The way the blockchain is built, it costs X in terms of computing resources. The RC is a way to manage that at scale. They've tried to make it so that those activities that use up the most resources cost the most in RC. Unfortunately, that negatively impacts new users. In this case, new users are effectively subsidizing the blockchain for older users. However, there are many older users who will support new users, and there is a whole culture built up around helping new users adapt and integrate.

Try some of these communities:

These are just a few. Network with others. Join a few Discord communities where other users can support you (and you them). It will get better.

Everything on this platform wants you to invest into steem. I don't really like it. Newcomers even have to pay to sign up now or wait 1-2 weeks. lol

It really is a lot to take in and learn about. From Steem to Steem power, RC, delegations, witnesses, Bots, gambling, dtube and more I am sure. It makes it very hard to keep up, but we will see how things go for steem. I definitely think something had to be done about all the spam.
