According to an India media outlet, India Today, with at least 35 deaths have been reported in Kerala, where the monsoon rains led to the worst deluge in the state’s history in a century.

Rail and air services were hit in Kerala as Kochi airport had to be shut due to water-logging and over 20 trains were cancelled by railway. Educational institutions remained shut.

Heavy rains have also caused flooding and devastation in the western states of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka this week.

Officials say hundreds of villages and a few towns in the affected areas of Maharashtra do not have electricity and drinking water and authorities are trying to restore electricity in some areas.

Fuel was also scarce because some districts had been cut off from the rest of the state.

Schools and colleges in many parts of western and Southern India have been shut since Monday and are unlikely to open this week, authorities have said.
