Why do we need blockchain for a social media platform involving money?

in #steemit7 years ago

I believe money has always been one of the strongest driving force of human interactions. So why no one has built a social media platform that involves money before the blockchain technology ? Why do we need a blockchain for that?

The idea of awarding contributions is good and all but it all boils down to TRUST.

Apart from high transaction fees, slow transactions and all, users most probably would not TRUST the central authority's fairness when it comes the distribution of money for the contributions.

So building a social media platform by integrating features of a decentralized ledger technology(DLT) a.k.a "the holy blockchain" we now can have a stable code that decides the distribution of newly generated tokens.

Thats great.

This is the reason i loved Steemit when I first read the whitepaper.

But now that I have been using Steemit for a few days I see A LOT of shitty data such as:

  • "That's a great post"
  • "I upvoted you, hope you upvote me too"
  • "Good job, my friend"

All this shitty comments people write without even reading a single paragraph of the post gets transacted the same way a high quality content. No one earns anything more than 0.02 dollar but people keep doing that in hope of i dont know wtf:)

So i definitely think there must be a downvote button to scrap these kind of useless comments out so the quality of the platform can increase. For example a downvote could impact a users future payouts negatively. Otherwise I don't see Steemit going elsewhere than a bunch of people trying to become rich easily.

What are your thoughts on this?

I don't think this is very necessary. I mean, sure people are going to abuse any tool that you give them. However, people who do that do not actually build the steem power that they need. They don't actually make much of a difference in the money that is distributed. The folks who build quality posts and spend time making good replies tend to actually garner more support. They build more power in the community and their votes hold more sway. While ultimately this does not do anything to discourage these poor quality behaviors, it DOES actually promote thoughtful responses. Over time, you will never make anything by spamming upvotes and saying "Much wow, so thanks" on every post. It is only by hard work that you make your vote matter. Once people realize that it isn't worth their time to do so, they will fade out or start producing. The internet was never meant to squelch the dummies... It was meant only to promote great communication. For my vote to matter, so does yours, even if I think you are ignorant. : )
