Building our first mining rig!

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

So about a month ago now my room mate and I starting messing with cryptocurrencies. He has done really well (had a lot of capitol to invest with me not so much haha) But we are both loving it! we thought it would be pretty cool to build our own mining rig so here are a few pictures from the process. We are not engineers so bare with me!

We decided to go with a super easy wood build. materials I think cost us a whopping total of $15 !!! breakin the bank over here I know. Found it to be a very simple place to start for our first rig. That way if we messed anything up it would be an easy and relatively cheap fix.

Here is the bottom and sides of the framework. crazy simplistic. The 3 planks on the bottom are where we plan to mount the motherboard and the power supply. We were waiting on the PCIs and our power supply to come in still At this time. (check out the sweet Harry Caray bags set ! ; ) )

This is the "top" of the frame and where we mounted the graphics cards themselves. Ryan went upstairs and grabbed a pillow case to put over the motherboard so we didn't get any sawdust in it from drilling the holes. I know, we're professionals.

Time to take a break and watch Schmitty play some Tekken!!

Everything we needed came in. As it turned out the power supply we had purchased did not support 6 graphics cards, only 3. So we put everything together and gave it a little trial.

Everything ran! which was a surprise to me for sure haha. I was not aware that you could build a fully functional PC without a case. i found it pretty interesting that we had done this and now one day have decided to build a gaming PC onto a wall. Why? I don't know But I'm going to do it.

This is the rig today. with the correct power supply. ALL 6 GPUs working and we are currently mining Ether. The front plate leaned on it is from an old PC we had lying around. we needed to use it for a power button.

Building a slightly prettier one using some METAL insert air guitar gesture here over the next week or so. that is my room mate Ryan and his brother's project I hope to be around as much as possible to document it better than this one. (found out steemit was a thing after we had already finished) so gimme a follow If you wanna stay tuned!!

(I found the metal for the next rig they were walking around trying to find forever! haha)

Here are the details on the electronics we used:
-Graphics cards: AMD Radeon rx 460
-Motherboard: Gigabyte G1 Sniper Z25
-Power supply: EVGA 750 GQ
-Ram: Hyperx DDR3 2 gb (x2)
-PCIs: They were made by Quality HD direct. After purschasing we heard they had some horrible reviews.
-CPU: Intel Celeron G1840 Processor
