I recommend people to calm down. Just because an issue is happening doesn't mean you can easily figure out what it is or even how to fix it once you know.

Fixes can also negatively affect others parts and it takes testing to effectively fix something.

If you really can't handle it, try utilizing busy.org or eSteem during this time. I am quite positive they are not sitting there being lazy as their platform has issues. Getting angry will not make them work faster.

A fix will come. At least the platform is still able to give you info and work, albeat slowly. It could not work at all.

Thanks for working guys!

Thanks for understanding! We appreciate everyone's patience and are working as hard and fast as we can to resolve all issues. Steem on!

Community Liaison, Steemit

Those who really believe in Steemit will stick it out, so you may loose some trolls, could be the platform will be so much better for a spring clean and major security overhaul!! :)

Oh well, that's the other way to look at it and I like your way of thinking:).... In failures find your solutions and in challenges find your opportunities.... All the bad is good for something in the end:).... Have a good one. Tomas

Thanks Tomas :)
When the platform is wanting to overtake Facebook and You Tube then attacks are going to come, so sooner they are dealt with the better! It will make Steemit stronger.
Have a good day too!

Absolutely...! This is a long-term commitment as it should be for any serious ICO and anyone invested in that ICO...a few teething issues along the way is the definition of development itself.

Hello steemit!

I have been waiting for a statement for quite a while and so have been other users. Being silent and not communicating to us is just leading to more frustration and will not help the situation, on the contrary, it is making it even worse. I am sorry to say but to come out with the statement such as above is just lame without addressing what is the problem, what is causing it and what the solutions are. I do not think it is too much to ask for and would definitely smooth out the situation if we know that we are being listened to and backed by the team that we believe in. My frustration with the whole issue is just leading to the disappointment right now. I was expecting to hear more.

Other then that, we love steemit and we love all the new ideas that are coming in the form of SMTs and others that are currently being worked on.

STEEM ON!

From his post, it does not seem that they know what the issue is. It is hard to give an update when they do not know what is causing the connection issues.

Look at it from their side. It must be extremely frustrating to work around the clock and NOT know what is causing the errors. And then, to not have the ability to answer the questions from the community, just adds more stress to them already not knowing what is going on.

I agree with this:

I am quite positive they are not sitting there being lazy as their platform has issues. Getting angry will not make them work faster.

I think they are working on solutions for the next DDoS now... as one has happened few weeks ago.

As there is no DDoS, could you take the time to explain what the root issues actually are? Thank you!

Very eye-catching! 😀

It is nice

Ned, c'mon! You have to realize that this is not a satisfactory update. What is happening, and when can we expect it to get better?

The site was working much better than this up until about two weeks ago, at which point we were told a DDoS was happening. The story doesn't make sense. All we want is communication, we know it's hard.

There definitely was a DDoS two weeks ago. It was very aggressive and was mitigated.

There are many things to consider for steemit that make mainstream DDoS solutions non-starters, but we've been able so far to work with our own solutions and are considering additional mechanisms to prevent future attacks.

Maybe Steemit should have a button that would lead to the Steemitblog or many Steem blogs where announcements could be made without the need to make it to the top of the trending page.

the trending page is a turn off to basically anybody who isn't on it or isn't paid off to get on it and this is known by everyone, I am glad solutions are being implemented so some users who rely on this platform for FOOD and Medical care especially in other countries as well as America can keep on steemin'

The DDoS Perps are definitely contained in this exhaustive List ;)

Cheer up @ned.

Everyone still loves Steemit ! even if it does feel like a 56k dial up with freeserve.net circa 1996.

btw busy.org is a pain in the arse

p.s all seems to be working fine at the moment.

What’s working just fine?

my little buffering circle is only taking a few seconds when posting (at the moment), is what's working just fine @mammasitta

Ok! I just befriended steemitstage clone and more than happy at the moment. It happenes in all relationships that you need to keep your distance from toxic vibes 😛😜 things will get better again. I’ve been through a lot

I'm not quite sure what steemitstage clone is.. like busy.org ? glad you're smiling.. I've been through a lot too. I've had a viral infection of the immune cells in my blood for about a year and can't really do much else other than steemit cos of chronic fatigue.

I am getting better, slowly. I can only eat about 15 foods off a strict list (no sugars or starch, so that's fruit, bread, pasta, rice, beans and potatoes. no biscuits, juice. ( I can have a cup of black coffee once a day.)

I've got 2 small babies, so I'm still smiling too. They are amazing (the girls) and life is always worth striving for. ask for nothing, give everything you've got. you find new avenues where you least expect them!

today I got offered a sync licensing partnership deal for my music catalogue.. things are looking up. @outerground is also an electronic music producer with 2 published albums

stag steemit.jpg

Nothing is really working fine.

I'm just using https://beta.chainbb.com/ for the moment... couldn't get used to busy.org... (by the way still not sure if chainbb is trustworthy enough so use your posting password at your own risk)

to be honest steemit seems to be back to it's normal self from where I'm jacking in. !!

Thanks Ned, I appreciate the follow-up.

@ned hopefully it is all fixed by Oct 29th!! We want to have a huge Steem-O-ween party!! Will you join us? No flights or hotels... All on Steemit!!
Peace

I'm by no means surprised that most mainstream solution were non-starters for the website as it needs to function quite differently. To me it's also quite understandable that building a custom solution to prevent or mitigate such attacks would take more time than just implementing Cloudflare (which was surprisingly a suggestion I saw on multiple occasions).

On one hand, not being able to use steemit.com reliably for some time was quite frustrating, but the fact that it took some time to get it back to normal with the infrastructure upgrades I'm sure were made was not surprising by any means and I think a lot of steemians showed a bit of undue impatience.

I really hope all issues are behind us :)

Thank you @ned. I don't think users understand the word "currently"

You are right! I did not understand

LOL! It's a wonder some read the post!

At least an explanation on top of the calm down headline - thanks for the second stage update, appreciate knowing you have no marketing team......

good to see you're still here. perhaps my plea for you to not quit didn't go unheeded.. Hope all is well and things have straightened out for you @uwelang

Thank you for the update. Strong work Ned! Hey, how are you going to use that cool Steem Silver Coin that you have now? I think it would look great as a bolo tie!! You can buy the bolo tie kits on Amazon and I've heard that they love bolo ties in Lisbon.

Some dolphin's are losing their patience. I'm just a minnow relating to you what some on my following list are saying. "Done powering down", etc..I try telling them to wait, but there are no real formal responses. It seems we are on a need to know basis, which might not be the best approach.

Obviously you will lose those who don't fully appreciate what "long haul" or long term mean. They want instant profit etc..

With that being said I would urge you to have a little more engagement. I'm sure you are way wealthier and smarter than me.. but sometimes being on a need - to - know basis generates more frustration.

I get it; something behind the scenes "might" be going on, and we might not necessarily need to know because it could cause more of an exodus.

its working ok for me? I understand and appreciate your team staying on top of this as well as your personal update.

Would be nice a simple notice, a friendly update that something is wrong so we don't have to hit our head when its not working :)

And thank you for all the hard work.

@Yehey

It might be very possible that more attacks are coming, and personally I think there's a good reason for that. It may not even all be with bad intentions, it could perhaps be necessary in order for Steem to really increase in value. If Steemit is preparing for this, seems to me their priorities are set in a very smart way.

So either two reason:

  1. The internet trolls anyone that doesn't meet an expected timeline.

  2. They don't actually know what's going on so they can't give one

  3. They just don't want to tell us.

  4. They're too busy working on fixes and performance improvements to provide an udpate.

  5. ???????? (Could be anything)

lol. two reasons:

Lists five reasons hahaha

Five reasons I love Steemit:

  1. Brilliant Folks
  2. Brilliant Quotes
  1. Aliens...

@ned can you let us know how often your team uses the production steemit.com site each day, as in are you all eating your own dog food? When I see so few posts and comments from steemit, inc team members, I have to wonder how they can fully understand how frustrating the site has been to use these past 2+ weeks. The lack of communication from you, @steemitblog, and @steemitdev is concerning because it sends the message communication about site issues is not a priority. There's no status page explaining previous outages, and no custom error page when there is an issue to let users know you're aware of it and doing something about it.

Many in the community are frustrated (as you can see from the 150+ comments on the dog food post I linked to above). They want to be heard and have their frustrations validated along with clear communication of what the specific problems are and how they are being addressed.

Also, would it be possible for you to elaborate on this comment:

There are many things to consider for steemit that make mainstream DDoS solutions non-starters

I've tried to get a more detailed explanation from @sneak but the answers didn't make sense to me. You're already using AWS so it would seem they already have your private keys. Why not go with Cloudfront (within AWS) and have them deal with DDoS for you for around $3k a month?

I look forward to meeting you and the team in Lisbon soon so we can talk about this more in detail.

Note: my first attempt to post this comment failed.

Its not working, my post disappeared 3 times now. At 4th it got live.

This is my Steemit experience in 10 minutes of usage:
TypeError: e is null = when i upvote post
Transaction failed = when i upvote post
Transaction broadcast error = when i post comment
TypeError: Network request failed = when i post comment
Duplicate transaction check failed = when i post coment
You have already voted in a similar way = when i upvote
I am pissed off right now.

I am getting more or less the sane results. I'm slowly loosing my trust and patience... sure we can accept such performance for a day or two. But this goes on week after week

Would this make you feel better? I got this earlier in my Blog page, after I made a post that was resteemed.

haha :D
I feel your pain.
It's better to stay off Steemit for a while, unless you have nerves of steel.

There are alternative websites like busy.org and chainbb.com that allow you to access the blockchain, with a different interface than steemit.com.

I did not know that..thanx for info! :)

this also happenned earlier on in the week , a user had posted about steems 48 year old record on their post

@starline , That’s what I get.
Is it worth Two cents of my time ?
Even write a post about it

Me too. Oh hey it only took one try when I upvoted your comment!! Let's see if this reply goes through the first time...🙄...OK second time...🙄...

Me too. Oh hey it only took one try when I upvoted your comment!! Let's see if this reply goes through the first time...🙄...OK second time...🙄... I'm really determined, third time...🙄...

Right, then that happens.

I am getting more or less the same results. I'm slowly loosing my trust and patience... sure we can accept such performance for a day or two. But this goes on week after week

Hello,
Why My ip was blocked in steemit.com?
Also, in steemd.steemit.com
I can't find any reason for that.
I'm Iranian. and IP range is: 2.186..
Please FIX it. Thanks.

Hey Ned, first of all thanks for the update. It would have been better with the detail explanation about the root cause. I am pretty sure the 30 software engineers in your team are great to resolve the problem, but don't forget there are also really knowledgable and talented software experts around Steemit, and you could get great help from all of them. What you and your team think cannot be always 100% correct when it comes to software architecture and security. Please be open, get the free help from the gurus who are willing to help you to resolve the problem and enhance the architecture just because they love Steemit.

Thanks, please keep me posted!

My thoughts exactly. There are a lot of very clever technical people on this platform and I'm sure there are also people who could help communicate to users, test systems, report bugs and support issues for the good of the platform and at no cost if only they were "in the loop" with the core steemit team a bit more.

Maybe bots took over in the meantime and cause this excess traffic. Anybody figured out, how many %age of transactions is caused by voting, resteeming and other bots? That human beings should curate good content is increasingly becoming marginalia.
