How To Apply A Learning Strategy Called "Group Investigation" in Your Classroom : Tips for Teachers

Hello Educators, on this occasion, I want to write an article about one of the learning strategies called Group Investigastion. Basically, this is one part of the cooperative learning model. Just like Jigsaw, Team Group Tournament, Everyone Is A Teacher, I've discussed before, Group Investigation also emphasizes the student learning process is done collaboratively and independently through group work.

The implementation of Group Investigation learning strategy aims to encourage students to learn directly with their friends through information seeking activities from various sources available. Students in the learning process are involved in various activities from the planning process to the evaluation stage. Generally, students conduct investigations as key activities in this strategy.

For example, students form groups according to the sub-topics they choose, and the teacher directs them to collect information about the topic they choose collaboratively through investigative activities.

To understand more about this learning strategy, the following are the learning steps to carry out this learning strategy in the classroom:

  1. After the class begins, the teacher explains some sub-topics that the student will study, and asks them to choose one of the sub-topics. After that, the teacher forms several groups consisting of 4-5 students. The group members are selected based on their similarity to the sub-topics they select.

  2. Then, students with their group peers are assisted by the teacher in a collaborative way to plan learning procedures that are appropriate to the sub-topics they choose. The Plannings include what they will learn, what steps they will take, where learning resources come from, and what learning objectives they want to achieve.

  3. Students conduct an investigation in accordance with the planning they make in the second stage. Students at this stage collaboratively collect information, analyze and draw conclusions from what they investigate. Also, each member provides opinions and ideas for the success of their group, so the discussion process can take place at this stage simultaneously.

  4. After conducting the investigation, they evaluate the information they got in the previous stage. The evaluation process determines what they will present and how they present to other groups based on the results they get.

  5. Students present the results of their investigation to other groups. One group member is appointed as a representative to present, or each member can present in turn. Students from other groups can ask questions to the group that is presenting.

  6. After all groups have finished presenting the results of their sub-topic investigations, the teacher provides clarification and evaluation of each group's performance. Evaluation can also be done through individual tests.

In conclusion, the application of Group Investigation as one of the student-centered learning models helps students to learn collaboratively and independently. The role of the teacher in the learning process only as a facilitator, while students learn actively. By applying this method, students are expected to achieve the learning goals they plan with their group mates to be successful.

I like research and group work. Although many dislike it. I believe that integration should be encouraged, to the liking, to share, to relate. To be able to complete tasks.
