Fathers are very important in a child's life and that is why it is a good thing to have a day where we honor dads and what they do for us.
Does this mean that if you do not have a dad, you may not celebrate this day? No, not at all. You maybe have someone in your life the is a 'father figure' to you and plays an important role in your life, be it an uncle, older brother, grandfather or neighbor or friend of the family.
If you have somebody that cares for you in a way a dad would, go right ahead and celebrate away.
In some countries Father's day are celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June, but not in all countries, so you have to make sure when it is celebrated in your country. Some other dates are
Russia - February, Brazil - Second Sunday of August, Australia and New Zealand - First Sunday of September, Indonesia - November
In order to celebrate, we will spend the day with our dad or 'father figure', cook a nice meal and give a card or present or go to church together as a family and enjoy the day together. You do not have to buy a present, you can also make something if you want to.
Remember, it does not need to be something big, it is just the idea or gesture that you want to show him that you care and appreciate him.
Some ideas for presents
- a card that you made and have written something nice in it or draw a picture of you two
- if he likes sports, you can have a fun day playing a sport with him he enjoys or buy a ticket to a sporting event or a jersey of his favorite team
- you can give him some 'vouchers' in which you will do certain chores for him like wash his car or help in the garden
- most of our dad would enjoy food and you can either take him out or cook his favorite meal
- if your dad is very busy, you can organize for one time for the house to be very quiet or he can be alone at home so he can relax and take a nap
There are so many ideas and if you use your imagination you will be able to come up with many more.
The original Father's Day is thought to have been founded by Sonora Dodd in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Sonora and her five siblings were raised by their single-parent dad. She thought that since there was a Mother's day, there should be a day to honor fathers as well.
A lot of money is spend on Father's day but you must not be blinded by the idea of shopping and spending lots of money. This is a special day where your dad would appreciate anything that comes from your heart.
Your dad is special every day and you cannot be nasty the whole year and then just be nice on Father's day. Even if there will be times we do not get along, you can choose any day to thank your dad for what he does for you, but on Father's day you can make him feel just a little bit more special.
