We learn more about Biology- Information and videos for little kids

Biology is the study of plants and animals and humans.  How living things work, are created and what their functions are.  There are many different things that you can look at in Biology.

Lets learn a few random facts about this.

A person who studies biology and different living things are called a biologist.

The largest living structure which is not man made, is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia.  It covers more than 2000 km and a very wide variety of sea life is found here.

Have a look at the wonderful world of fish and sea creatures that are found here.

All living things are made up of cells.  Cells are the building blocks.  The first person to ever see a cell was a man called Antonie van Leeuwenhoek.  You can read more about him here.

If you look at an area where living things like plants and animals and non living things like water, the sun, the soil etc, interact with one another, we call it an ecosystem.  A person who studies these ecosystems are called ecologists.

Bacteria and viruses are small organisms that can make you sick, but some bacteria are useful and they can help to digest your food and even make yoghurt.  A well know virus is the one that causes the flu and it can be treated with anti-viral drugs.  Bacteria are very small and consist of only one cell.  If you get a bacterial infection, it can be treated with antibiotics.

Moulds, yeasts and mushrooms are types of fungus.

Plants can produce their own food through  process called photosynthesis.  They use water and sunlight and release oxygen and store starch.  This is why we call plants 'producers'.  The animals eat either plants, or other animals or both.  We call them 'consumers'.  An animal that eat plants are called a herbivore, if it eats meat it is called a carnivore and if it eats plants and meat, it is called an omnivore.

  • Can you give examples for each of the groups?

Some animals and plants are in danger of disappearing from Earth and we call them 'endangered species'.  Once their is none left of a specific species, they are called 'extinct'.

  • See if you can do research and find two plants or animals who are endangered and two species which are extinct.
Charles Darwin developed the idea of natural selection, sometimes called survival of the fittest. It is a process that involves living things with favorable traits being more likely to reproduce, passing on their favorable traits to future generations.

It is very important that we protect the Earth and nature and all that is in it.  Us humans tend to destroy a lot of nature and this can lead to a lot of problems, because nature can live without humans, but we cannot live without nature, we rely on it for food and shelter.

Do not be a destroyer, be a protector....
