We learn more about the features of Earth - Part 11 Earthquakes - Information for kids

Have you ever felt the Earth shake?  Maybe you live in a country where earthquakes are something that occurs a lot or maybe you stay in a country where you have never experienced it.

Lets learn more about this natural phenomena that can occur in different parts of the world.

The rocks in the Earth's crust constantly moves and when the plates bump into one another and press against each other, an earthquake may occur when the pressure is released and it creates waves that moves through the crust and shakes the earth.

These waves are called 'seismic waves' and the scientist can use it to determine where the earthquake started.  The place where it starts is called the 'epicentre'.

Earthquakes can happen and not even be felt and some can cause a lot of damage.  The scientists use a machine called a 'seismograph' to measure the strength of the earthquakes.  They also use numbers on the 'Richter scale' from 1-10 and while a 3 will not even really be felt, a 6 can cause damage.  Is there a difference between the seismograph and the Richter scale?

A seismograph is any instrument that measures motions of the ground, including those of seismic waves generated by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and other seismic sources. While, the Richter scale is a scale, ranging from 1 to 10, for indicating the intensity of an earthquake.

Have a look at how the measure the strength of earthquakes.

There has been many earthquakes over the world and some is just a tremble and some leave people homeless and can cause a lot of damage.  The worst earthquake ever recorded happened in Valdivia in Chile in 1960 and it was recorded as a 9.5 on the Richterscale.

  1. When does an earthquake take place?
  2. What is the epicentre?
  3. What is the main shock and what follows it?
  4. Name the parts the Earth is made up of?
  5. What makes up the surface of the Earth?
  6. Watch the rest of the video and explain in your own words why an earthquake will happen?
  7. Why does the earth shake during an earthquake?

Hello @alishi in my place Earthquakes happen a lot.Even yesterday morning we had a mild earthquake in Dhaka.I almost never get afraid by earthquakes, only sometimes.

Wow this is something we do not know in my country - it has happened but like one in 10 years and very mild - I know there was a big one in 1969 and that was about the only one that did damage

Yeah, shocking earthquake doesn't occur frequently in the history.I don't care about the mild earthquake as I have said already. But some people just panic even if they sense mild tremor in the surface.
