Imagine you are on the beach and suddenly there is a wave much higher than a house rushing towards the beach.  That must be truly scary.  Luckily we in South Africa do not experience this, but there are a lot of countries in the world that have felt the devastation of a Tsunami. 

Lets find out more about this phenomena.

Most countries which are prone to have Tsunamis will have emergency plans in order for when this happen.  Tsunamis can cause a lot of destruction and chaos and it is important that people know how to keep themselves safe if possible.

Which countries will stand a good chance to experience tsunamis?

Scientists estimate that almost three quarter of the world tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean, where the megathrusts (subduction zones) are so common (Aleutian Islands, Alaska, Chile, Philippines, Japan etc). 

In 2004 there was and earthquake in the Indian ocean and the tsunami that was caused because of this, killed more than 200 000 people in 14 countries.  That is a huge natural disaster.
