Emotional Intelligence + Attitude = Zero

From my last article:-https://steemit.com/behaviour/@allandharvey/influencing-thinking-inspiring-performance

I think we can agree that despite outstanding interventions, there are few if any that bring about long-term behaviour change.

What I want to suggest is that if we can get the individual to change from the inside we have a better chance of succeeding with classroom type interventions and even team building.

I will reveal specifics on retraining the brain in my final episode on this topic of change.

Emotional Intelligence

Since the 1995 publication of Daniel Goleman’s international bestseller Emotional Intelligence, Why It Can Matter More Than IQ, a global movement has developed to bring “EQ” into practice in businesses, schools, and communities around the globe.

Notwithstanding that trainers, facilitators, coaches and psychologists alike have been carrying out extensive EQ tests, to ensure a more significant return on training investment a decent return on investment in training etc is yet to be realised and the reluctance to spend vast sums of money on training for ‘less than a best’ returns is still a stumbling block for training institutions.

“IQ may get you hired, but the lack of EQ gets you fired.”

How do we help people take ownership of their emotions to reason and think differently?

Once I have shared with you the foundation tool that turned my life around 28 years ago, we will be reflecting on each step to further enhance changes you can make.

Attitude.

Many folks believe attitude is the main barrier to change. After-all it is the subject of many a discussion and debate, repeatedly addressed in families, work situations and social environment. For example;
'You have a bad attitude.' 'Your attitude sucks.' 'If you would just change your attitude.' are commonplace statements often bandied about,

Business leaders identify team conflict or other counter-productive behaviours that negatively affect performance and targets. What do they do?

One of the most popular activities or interventions is to bring in a motivational speaker or even ‘find’ a large budget and send the team on an adventure – team building!!!!

My question then is how will this change attitude? simple answer - It doesn’t.

To illustrate my point, I'll use my favourite scenario.

Lets say you and I are part of a team where this conflict and relationship challenges exist. In fact, you and I do not see eye to eye. To this end we are placed together in an abseiling activity. Now our lives literally depend on how each of us conduct ourselves, doesn’t it? Not for one second in this exercise am I going to be taking any chances with your safety. Why? Because I am praying that you don’t either and visa versa.

How is this addressing our attitude towards each other in the office or back in the team environment?

Obviously, it’s not, because the reason for the behaviour/attitude change during team building has little to do with the initial concern and reason for our adventure. My experience has shown that the expectations in terms of team building outcomes are seldom realised. Along with corporal punishment, I categorise team building as an attitude adjustment intervention? They seldom worked.

Why is that? Because Behaviour, Emotional Intelligence and Attitude are all a manifestation of something far more complex but something we each have absolute control over, and for which we must take full responsibility.

Tune in for the final episode in my next article and DISCOVER how you can make significant long-term behavioural changes and unleash that hidden potential.

I think it is time for my AAK.... Attitude Adjustment Klap. I haven't had one in a long time :) Love reading your posts. Keep'em coming :)

Very Interesting Post ,Must look into this more?, I live a very chaotic , grab the moment lifestyle. ( which is why my keys , cell phone, and wallet , seem to hide themselves away at night!)

Hey Al, nice to see you on here. Thanks for the post.
Even though the workplace is trying to incorporate more EQ based programs and tests, they tend to still revert back to the IQ lead leadership when pressure hits regardless of long term cost. Unfortunately, leaders are still seen as those that are willing to make noise and make the big decisions regardless of cost to others.
I hope the change does keep happening however.

Keep well mate! LFL :)

Heh @towjam...it's it etiquette to ask who is behind the steemit names? LFL I'm dof... On the topic... Did you know that at least 83% of leadership in SA is still dictatorial....

What a pleasant surprise... Thank you for that...

Attitude is something over which one has control, if one wants to. I couldn't agree more regarding the value (not) of teambuilding exercises, and as for the value of training, often the ROI will never be realised because the training strategies rarely include mechanisms to bolster sustained learning. Doing that would break the budget and althought there may be big budgets for team building, training is a Cinderella, and that is the last budget to get approved and the first to be cut. Very short-sighted, but the reality of business because its impact on the bottom line is so hard to measure. So interesting that the moniker "learning organisation" has all but disappeared from the discourse around workplace training and human development.

Very true. I am yet to see the benefit of sending my staff on training courses. For actual skills, it is different, but all these behaviour change courses and motivational courses are a waste of time.

Agree with you that costly motivational speakers and team building do not work @alandharvey, as I've experienced throughout all my years in the corporate world.
Change needs to start from within before we can change our world, the world around us!
