Phobias- Are they real?
What is a phobia?
Phobias can be divided into specific phobias, social phobia, and agoraphobia. Types of specific phobias include to certain animals, natural environment situations, blood or injury, and specific situations. The most common are fear of spiders, fear of snakes, and fear of heights.
A phobia is an unnatural fear or hostility towards something. There are various types of phobias. Some people have an unnatural fear of spiders or snakes and in psychology a phobia is classified as a type of anxiety disorder. People who suffer from phobias often overreact, and it can cause anxiety attacks even when they are just close to the specific "object" or situation.
Even though the fear is real, and that they are aware that the object or situation can not really do them any harm, they are not in control. The fear controls them!
Weird phobias!
There are some really weird phobias out there and it can range from:
- People being afraid of cheese - Turophobia
- People being afraid of spiders - Arachnophobia
- a fear of falling asleep - Somniphobia
- a fear of clowns - Coulrophobia
What is an anxiety disorder?
Anxiety is a mental health disorder. It is characterized by fear and feelings of worry and anxiousness.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms are pretty obvious. They include restlessness, anxiety, or even irritation when you are put into the situation. It is only a phobia if the symptoms are highly severe and makes you tremble.
What are the treatments for it?
The treatments include counselling and other types of therapy. Medication is also required in some cases. There is a lot of help out there. Some people go on camps to actually face their fears to try and overcome them.
What is the difference between fear and anxiety?
It is normal to have a fear for something. Everyone has fears. However, it is not normal to constantly be afraid of something. If the fear is long term and the symptoms are very severe, then it can be associated with an anxiety disorder.
There are really thousands of phobias out there, very interesting that as a species some people have become more prone to phobias than others. Good write up
The biggest problem with OCD, Phobias and Anxiety is people are afraid to address them because it is classified as a mental illness. The word mental illness automatically throws up barriers that are hard to tear down because it is taboo because that term was only associated with people in asylums in the past. Great post by the way.
