If you ever have a "bad" teacher I guarantee you never forget!

I have found that when anyone is asked this question the floodgate is open. Permission is given, a flow of pent up frustrated feelings that have been stored away in the core memory banks. It does not seem to matter if it is 10 years or longer no-one forgets the teacher who could not teach, communicate with students and manage behaviours. The yelling, the punishment, the bullying, the threats and so the list goes on ....

Bad teachers come under all kinds of guises. They may initially appear as charming and competent so parents feel assured that their children are going to have a good learning year. There are others who present as a worry straightaway showing a lack of conviction in their words, little or no eye contact or wishy washy.

Kids quickly work out whether the teacher is a dud. How they manage the year depends on their level of resilience and personality. Some kids sustain negative emotional impacts on their confidence and self worth. Yelling, put downs and criticism wears them down.

While there are other kids who have a lot of resilience and instead of being adversely affected have some fun. Playing tricks, hiding teaching materials, recording videos of the classroom action and constant organised comments and actions are carried out on the teachers. For example, one young lady laughed as she remembered how and her friends regularly hid the teacher's cigarettes. They would sit back and watch her trying to find them before break time.

Let me assure you that no school wants a bad teacher, it is a nightmare when one enters. It is the time for parents to talk with the school administrators to get answers, action and solutions. Depending on the type of school, whether it is an independent or state school depends on what can happen. It all lays with the effectiveness of the administrators, how good they are to efficiently solve the problem.

If your child has a bad teacher, act. It is not worth a whole year of pain. If the principal is not doing enough you have the power to choose other options. Remember children are too precious.
