I love animals - Reading, videos and a writing exercise for small kids - Part 34 The Mosquito

Some animals are just a pain and we do not like having them around us and will not think twice to kill them.  You are trying to sleep and a pesky mosquito is making a noise around your ears.... bzzzzzzz..... that is enough to grab the Doom and spray it or swat it.

Lets learn more about these insects that can irritate us so much, sting us and leave an itchy bump behind...

Mosquitoes from the Culicidae family, they are a midge-like fly.

As if a mosquitoes is not enough nuisance, there are over 3500 types of mosquitoes.  Some of these can carry diseases from one person to another and spread it fast.

Mosquitoes cause more deaths than any other animal in the world. They are carriers of diseases, including malaria, dengue fever, and yellow fever which can be transmitted to humans and animals when the mosquito feeds on blood.

You can read more about these diseases here and it is very important that if you live or visit an area where you know mosquitoes that carries diseases live, you take the necessary precautions like sleeping with a mosquito net or drinking medicine and also applying enough mosquito repellent.  If you do start getting sick, you need to see the doctor as fast as possible.

Mosquitoes follows the cabon dioxide we exhale.  They will be more prone to sting people with high body temperature and people that breathe heavy.  We joke and say a mosquito likes you because you have 'sweet blood', but that is not entirely true.

The female mosquito is the one who suck the blood because that helps with the development of the eggs.  The male live of plant juice.  Females will live a week or up to a month, where the male will only live a few days.

Like other flies, mosquitoes go through four lifecycles stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

The female will choose water that is not moving or a very shallow puddle of water will also do.  The eggs are lain just underneath the surface of the water.  From here it will hatch.

Even though a mosquito can beat their wing up to 600 times per minute, they are one of the slowest flying insects.

Luckily mosquitoes do have predators that eat them like fish and other insects and frogs and lizards.

  • Watch the story for fun.  Once you are done you are going to write the story in your own words.  Nobody tells the story so you have to watch and create your own story.
