in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

The are found almost everywhere on earth, and sometimes even in water.  There are between 6 an 10 million different kinds. They can be pretty, some are helpful and some are just very annoying to us humans.  These are insects.

Some have wings and some not but their bodies all consist of three parts.  The head, the thorax (the chest) and the abdomen (back of the body).  They also have  2 antennae on their heads and 3 pairs of legs attached to the body.

Some insects can walk on the surface of water and some insects fly.  Some live together in colonies and can be helpful to humans and help pollinate flowers.

  • Choose any 10 types of insects. Find one interesting fact on each and say if they are helpful or harmful to humans.

Insects are cold blooded and most of them hatch from eggs after which they go through different stages until they are an adult.

Lets look at a few facts on different insects.  You can add to this list.

  • Only female mosquitoes drink blood.  The male live off plant juices.
  • Silkworms produces silk from which they can make clothes.
  • Cicadas can make a very loud sound.
  • Bees and ants live in 'social colonies' where there are different groups and 'jobs' for them.
  • Spiders are not insects, but they belong to the 'Arachnid' family.
  • You will find bees on every continent. except Antarctica.  There is not enough food to keep bees alive.
  • Ants gives of a scent which they or others can follow and they also communicate with each other through these 'pheromones' they give off.

You are now going to complete the activity

  • First find pictures or videos on the above mentioned facts.
  • Watch the video and answer the questions.
