How to Harvest Seeds From Corn and Other Plants

Hello fellow Steemians, I hope you are all well! In this post I would like to give you some pointers on how you can harvest seeds from your fruits and vegetables successfully, to ensure that they germinate and produce fruit and vegetables themselves. In my community, many farmers rely on their crops to produces healthy seeds, which need to be used for the next sewing season, in order to generate a good profit, or even to feed their people.

In the Integrated Farming program, I follow, we pay a lot of attention to harvesting seeds form plants like spinach, kale, corn, chilli and long beans etc. This helps us become self-sustainable and independent.

Steps to harvest corn seeds successfully :

Remove 1/3 of the fruit from the corn cob i.e. 1/3 from the top and 1/3from the bottom. We remove the fruit/seeds from the middle of the plant only. Why? Because the seeds at the top are younger than the rest, making them too immature for growth.

Similarly, the seeds at the bottom of the plant are older and might have passed their “sell by” date.

This method applies to most other plants too.

Following this method will ensure that your seeds sprout and produce healthy food and vegetables.

Good luck,,,!!!

nice article. Interesting fact about corn.

Thans so much mu friend

That's very interesting. It's not really something you'd think of at the time but it makes perfect sense to do that. Question : if the bottom ones have passed their sell by date, how would you know? Since you need to dry the corn and sow it next year, what is it that determines a seed's viability?

I recently did a post on how to save pollen for times when the pollen is ripe but the ears of corn haven't fully developed to a stage where it can use the pollen yet. Have you used this method? https://steemit.com/collorchallenge/@simplylizelle/thursday-geen-colorchallenge-sweetcorn-and-learning-about-harvesting-and-keeping-pollen

the seeds on the bottom and top will not grow regularly when planted, because it will not occur specifically for the plant itself. because the earlier out at the bottom, and vice versa also on the top. Problem method you have done i will read your post further. thanks so much. i like you

thank you for sharing information fruit cort

@boyasyie In Venezuela, the way peasants extract corn seed is identical. however, the ears are larger.... very good work!
