Saying What I Think with Respect
All children have feelings. Adults often teach children to talk about their feelings. Learning how to talk about feelings with respect is important.
Usually, when children are happy and comfortable, it is easier for them to talk with respect. When I am happy, it's easy for me to talk with my calm voice and cooperative words.
When children feel frustrated or angry, it is more difficult for them to talk with respect. It’s important to share these feelings with parents. It’s also important to try to use a calm tone of voice and cooperative words.
Restating with Respect
Many children make mistakes by being disrespectful. They used a disrespectful tone of voice or words. This can hurt others’ feelings or cause them to feel insulted or angry.
Learning to talk with respect is important. Children need to think and practice to talk with respect.
When children make mistakes, adults can help. When adults hear a disrespectful tone of voice or words, they need to stay calm and say, “Restate with respect, please.” This gives children a chance to think and try again, using a calm tone of voice and cooperative words.
