TEACHER ROOM: Conceptual maps as a learning strategy.

In agreement, with a definition, knowledge is information capable of reproducing itself, that is, structured and associated with each other. It is known that a good methodological presentation, a good graphic interpretation facilitate the learning of complex material.

Effective visualization stimulates memory work, allows you to see the essence of the problem, reveal new knowledge in the data set. One of the means to visualize knowledge is the construction of conceptual maps.

Concept maps are graphic tools to organize and represent knowledge.
The conceptual map includes:
  • concepts, usually represented in figures of a certain type (circles, rectangles, clouds ...),
  • The relationship between them (in the form of lines connecting the two concepts).
The concepts are short formulations (often in a word) related to domain concepts that describe the situation under study, or patterns in events, objects and situations.
The lines indicate words or connection phrases that explain the type of connection between concepts. Relationship words are usually verbs. Every two concepts with a connection word relationship form a unit of meaning, a short sentence.
As a result of the elaboration of a conceptual map, you get a system of connected concepts in a single set, a concept that allows you to find a solution to the problems or see instructions for an additional search. The process of expanding the concept map can be endless, you can go back to each map again and again.

There are 3 methods:

  1. Conceptual hierarchy map.

  2. Map of conceptual relationships (Spider Card)

    It is believed that the conceptual mapping technique was developed by Joseph D. Novak as a means to intensify the educational process in the teaching of science. The term appeared in the framework of the trend of "constructivism", according to which learning should be implemented as an active process that involves the active construction of knowledge by students based on their own experience: not get ideas, but create them.

    How is the conceptual map developed?

    A concept map is a way to show the structure of a topic. The center of the map, apparently, occupies the central theme, around which are located the main ideas connected by lines, which show what is the relationship between them. When we move away from the center, ideas become more secondary.

    Concept maps are widely used in education. These are some of its characteristics:

    • They can stimulate creativity by allowing the free association of ideas.
    • Can help in the planning of tasks.
    • Allows you to visualize the concepts in a simple way.
    • It serves to communicate ideas in an orderly manner.
    • It serves to relate all the contents to each other, since some maps can join others.
    • It serves for the identification of concepts, interactions of hierarchies based on the analysis of sources.
    • Generate new knowledge;
    • It is a way of memorizing when studying certain phenomena;
    • You can develop ideas collectively;
    • Incentive to brainstorm;
    • It serves to organize your thoughts and ideas;

    Here are some free concept map templates.
