Exercise is as important as food, freshe air, water etc for the body. Sound mind is found in a sound body. Exercise is a good tool to maintain sound body and hence sound mind.

(a) Exercise increases functioning of heart and lungs.During exercise the metabolic demand of body increases and to keep pace with the increasing demand, blood flow and oxygen supply has to increase to supply the required nutrients and oxygen demand of body.

(b) Many waste product of the body are excreted in the form of sweat and urine. During exercise blood flow to kidney increases which increases GFR and thereby urine formation-waste product elemination.

(c) It promotes weight loss due to increased calorie utilization because of incrased BMR. Increased utilization of fat has been shown to reduce risk of cardivascular diseases, metabolic syndrome , type 2 diabetes and certain cancers etc.

(d) it improves the digestion. Exercise increases blood flow to gastrointestinal tract and therby increasing the absorbition and assimilation of nutrients.

(e) It makes the muscles strong. By increasing workload , muscles undergo hyperteophy and hyperplasia to increase strength to combat increased workload.

(f)It promotes better and deep sleep.

(g) It improves energy and boosts sex life.

(g) Mental or intellectual value of exercise
Exercise increases mental maturity of the child. It develops the imaginative and reasoning power of the child. It quickens the common sense of the child.
It also develop self confidence of the child. It also help the child in maintaining mental balance.


Exercise improves mood and decreases depression, anxiety and stress. These effects are accrued to both structural and chemical changes in the brain milleu.
Structural changes are seen in the brain parts responsible for stress. Increaae in hipppcampal size has been shown in people practising regular exercise. Hipppcampus is reaponsible for consolidation and therfore delayed dementia and alzehmers disease.

Chemical changes include increased sensetivity of brain tissue to neurotranitters like norepinephrine and seratonin.
Exercise inreases release of endorphins in brain. Endorphins are known to alleviate depressive mood and decrease pain sensations.

People often relate exercise to weight loss but there are a few studies which have shown that exercise contributes little to no effect on weight loss. One of the significant effects pose by exercise is by improving brain's function. Checkout Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor if you haven't. You will find it quite interesting.

One of the study may be against but mamy studies are in favour.
Yes exercise improves brain function and that is already mentioned.
