Convincing Students To Embrace Learning

One of the most complicated part of the teaching job is to instill the value of learning. The apathy received from some students at the moment of teaching can be discouraging. And teachers feel that their students' interest are in other matters; and they wish that their students have the same interest toward school.

But that's so much to ask, considering the low degree of value students might attach to studying. So, the issue, as title suggests, is how to imbue value into the learning process.

To begin with, there are elements that must be examined. They are presented in the lives of students outside of schooling, which give them joy. One of these elements is entertainment.

The entertaining element

We know that the average student doesn't actually feel passion towards school. Many of them like it though because they can socialize and make friends. But the studying aspect is not much welcome. The underlying reason is that they don't see studying as something that can be entertaining.

In today's world we witness what attracts young people. They like technology and be connected through social media. That's what teachers are competing against. So, we can just leverage on fundamental aspects to conceive the same effect toward studying.

Many teachers use strategies to make studying funny and entertaining. But I think the most approaches fall short because they still hold the basis of monotonous assignments, and they end it being regular tasks masked with dynamic activities.

Observe

Teachers must observe how young people interact with what they like. For example, a kid that likes to spend most of his time in video games are developing skills that are overlooked. Many would think that the kid is wasting his time. But when an adult speaks with him, he can be surprised that the boy are developing abilities regarding computing.

Most of children develop skills by doing the things they like. They learn without knowing it. And because of that, they don't reject it. On the contrary, they find joy and continue doing so.

Obviously, teachers, and specially parents should intervene if they see their children are becoming a coach potato. But also, they should observe carefully, because as I said, there are abilities getting trained and improved.

Learning is the keyword

Sometimes teachers make so much emphasis on the word studying. But I think we must focus on word learning instead. When we were young, we learnt many useful things, which we were not aware of.

And the reason is simple. When we willingly interact with things that are not associated with school or something like that, we are so open to absorb information and engage with it through some capacity.

That doesn't happen in school because there are some much concentration in studying and doing assignments that the entertainment part is missing. There are cases where the discovery aspect is absent. So, how we can inspire if the wonder of discovering is not around.

Considerations

Thus, we have to stop using the word studying regularly. It's not secret that the majority of youngsters study because they have to. That's why I think we need to aboard the importance of learning. Show them (instead of telling) how practical learning can be useful and funny too.

In others words, it's the perceived value of learning that we should impregnate in their minds. If we do that, youngsters not only learn, they also embrace studying willingly. And we know that's all teachers aspire to.
