Bloom’s Taxonomy

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

Many of the @steemiteducation members are experienced teachers who had their teacher training programme donkey's years ago.

I do not mean the great steemit author @donkeypong who is a great writer but what I am simply trying to indicate is the extremely experienced teachers who were trained many years ago.

When we first started, the level of complexity of Bloom’s Taxonomy were stated as nouns.

Later on, it was revised into verbs.

Why do you think there is a change need?

The process of learning and application is a continuous progression. The verbs could be a good indication that our pupils should actively apply these to acquire the required skills or application skills to be more future ready.

As teachers, passive teaching is really the old dog’s tricks that cannot engage especially young learners within the classroom these days.

With internet and mobile apps advancement, they have better engagement with these technology.

Teachers who stay the same and complain about their pupils not paying attention will really need to wake up and reflect on how you have been teaching their subject to their pupils.

Further revision of Bloom’s Taxonomy

I have recently found out about the new layout of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Why do we need another change?

Teachers have just learnt one thing and now another revision.

Notice that it is no longer a triangle.

The direction is starting with analyse, evaluate and create at the same level.

As a teacher, what are your thoughts when you see this?

Isn’t it true that before you can create knowledge, you should analyse and evaluate first?

These three components should work together and should have equal weight.

Great content creators like @lukestokes, @surpassinggoogle, @donkeypong, @hanshotfirst, @anneke, @hopehuggs, @meesterboom, @adsactly, @d-pend, @exyle, @giantbear, @eco-alex, @travelgirl, @kennyskitchen and many other awesome content creators not mentioned here must have gone through various of analysing and evaluating before deciding the relevant content to be created that very often spice up the excitement and add great value to the platform.

This really gives you a clue on how you can create great content based on Bloom's Taxonomy. Don't write the old way but go through the thinking process for better content creation.

In conclusion

The education landscape can be changing each day with the changes of the knowledge and demands of 21st century.

What we think was valid has now become the past.

Teachers need to stay relevant by keeping a good hold of new knowledge to cope with the new generations of learners with different future job requirements and demands.

I'm a bit scarred by the taxonomy after this year and my evaluations. I think it's interesting to use it as a guide, but it seems like all the other snake oil sold to admins. This is supposedly the next magic bullet that they are going to hold teachers accountable to every time they observe, and yet it keeps changing so it we will always be chasing this moving target.

Are you turning taxonomy upside down?

Thanks for pointing it out. Definitely should end with remember of knowledge. Edited.

Usually we focus on the skill of recall or identify, but actually teachers are creating an environment of curiosity at the beginning of any unit. Even though the kids know nothing about it we are implying higher levels of reasoning to engage students from the beginning. Then after practice and application finally they actually do "remember".

Although this is opposite it is really not that much different from the original simple learning target "remember".

I often teach upside down. Because I teach 16 different classes it really depends on the learning language of the students I teach. Some need to be inside the box and told what they are doing. Most are willing to be surprised.

It is the first time I saw it presented this way.
Congratulations for saying it like it is @fun2learn.

I am moved by the way you think and consider you a friend.
