Expanded Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs has been around for a long time and there was revision to it to include other aspects that form the higher order needs. The new aspects actually coincide well with our desired 21st century skills for our students.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is really some considerations about the motivational factors that each individual may have.
It may not necessary be a progressive one from bottom up but we do experience more than one level being satisfied in our past experience.
The Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is also known as deficiency needs. The lack of these needs may result in wrong actions and deeds to get those needs met.
Let’s watch a short video for the explanation of the expanded Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs below.
Basic needs (Coping with behaviours and life)
Physiological Needs
These are the basic needs of all living things like air, food, water, ability to sleep etc.
When we have been working hard for several days, the first thing that your body will tell you is the need for sleep.
Without proper sleep, most of our students may not be able to concentrate well in class. When it is near to the break time, teachers do find it harder to teach as the students are hungry for food.
Safety Needs
The need to feel safe. Just like our house, some people will install extra home security system to have the sense of security when they are not at home.
Some people ensure that they save at least 20% of their salaries to ensure that they have the finance to retire in future.
Completing a project before the deadline to prevent the payment of compensation.
Stress and anxiety come when the need of safety is not met.
Love and Belonging Needs
Basically, the need for different relationships for communication and socialisation.
When the need is not satisfied, one may end up being isolated from others. The emotion of loneliness will come which sometimes may lead to sadness.
Without the need of love being satisfied, many may just go the wrong path resulting in many relationship issues.
Esteem Needs
The need to get recognition and have a good reputation.
The need to get other people to notice them.
Some children have great need to achieve high results in their examination as they want the praises from teachers, parents and friends.
They want to be seen as the smart ones.
You can see this need being associated with ego as well.
Growth needs (Higher order needs)
Cognitive Needs
The need to gain more understanding and knowledge.
In simple, this is to satisfy our cognitive needs.
Most of us have the desire to know more about how we can progress in steemit and the different new apps available to market our articles and content more effectively.
The need to know and understand things is to satisfy our desire to gain the knowledge that we are interested in. We need our cognitive needs to be met.
Aesthetic Need
A desire for beauty.
Some people like to travel to look at the beautiful scenery of other countries.
They find it refreshing as going tours to look at other countries can satisfy their aesthetics need for beauty.
There are many singers who composed their own songs and post them on dtube or dsound.
Creating wonderful songs satisfy their aesthetics need as well.
The desire to create art pieces as well as the satisfaction of able to appreciate art pieces that you get to see and you feel happy when you are able to take photographs of them.
Your aesthetics needs may be met by other means that really depends on your interest and what you feel is beautiful.
Self Actualization
It is considered that everyone wants to be good by nature but they would do bad things when their basic needs are not met.
If their safety gets threatened, a man may commit a crime of killing to protect himself.
A child may choose to steal in school when they do not have what others have due to the lack of the basic needs.
Self-actualization also leads to the desire to release our true potential and live up to the best we can in life.
The desire to find the purpose in our life to find the true meaning of living.
Just like many of the @steemiteducation authors, they have the need to write quality articles as it gives them a sense of fulfilment in life. This really drives many of us to keep writing.
Transcendence
This is the need to help others without considering about ourselves. The compassion, empathy, sympathy and different feelings to help others beyond ourselves.
Caring about others more than ourselves. The need to have others experiencing good more than ourselves. Just like to give up your sleep so that you can help others. Give up your money and time to help charity work.
Feeling happy for helping others.
In conclusion
What is the point of knowing all these different needs?
As parents and educators, we should be aware of these needs so that we are able to understand the root of certain problems due to the lack of the needs being satisfied.
A teacher who is teaching the high achievers but always complains about the students not being interested in his lesson. Perhaps the need to satisfy their need for knowledge may not have been met resulting boredom in these high achievers.
Many social problems in our work place can be the result of different needs not being met. By recognising these needs, it helps us to understand the root of the issue with great clarity.
