Know Your Staff To Know Your Stuff

Many heads of organisations often neglect the need to know the individuals within the organisations regardless of how minor one’s role may be.

By know each staff well, the head of an organisation would not only have an overview of his organisation but micro-view of the role that each staff performs.

An organisation is not an organisation without human resource.

The physical building does not determine the success of the company but the staff is the crucial part of the organisation that makes the difference.

Who Are You?

The head should make an effort to put a name to each face. He should know the basic role of each staff and observe personally how each staff performs at the respective role.

By making an effort to know the staff, the head can determine the potential of each staff to provide the future possible prospect of each staff.

By drawing out each staff possible prospect, the head can provide suitable mentors to guide future successors of respective roles.

Professional development becomes meaningful rather than random. One-size-fits-all policy is not an effective management style but customisation can ensure each role is assigned to maximise one’s potential.

Professional Development

By knowing each staff well as mentioned earlier, we can determine the required training for each staff.

By getting staff to be trained and developed based on their personal learning needs for their respective roles, the organisation is using its development fund wisely and prudently.

The staff would naturally have the motivation to be trained since it is according to their interest and need.

Regular discussion sessions should also be carried out to find out the preference of each staff every few months since human can be quite unpredictable. Mindset and interest can change.

Committed Staff

By knowing each staff well, the head has a personal connection with each staff. This human connection can lead to many committed staff.

When each staff feels valued, the staff would be committed to stay with the organisation.

In my school, there would be a change of principal every seven years.

When I first came to the school, the turnover rate was very high but it decreased drastically when there was a change of principal who had great interest in staff welfare.

When an organisation becomes a second home to the staff, commitment is a natural outcome.

In Conclusion

It is never easy to be the head of any organisation.

The boss of the company or the principal of the school all require the management of human resources.

The success of the organisation has many factors and the human resource management is one of the main factors for success since there is no organisation when there is no staff.
