As parents and teachers, we can teach and spend many hours getting our children to memorise concepts and information but memorising may not become permanent memory unless we get them to repeat and practise numerous times.

Since learning comes from whatever that is shared with our children, there may not be deeper understanding and our children simply learn exactly what is being taught.

Passive learning had been a traditional method that was used since we were kids.

What we knew was what was being taught. We did not know what was beyond our textbooks unless we did further research on our own.

With the demand of present society, we need to move away from passive learning to active discovery of knowledge.

Construction Of Interpretation

When information is given, there may not be deeper understanding except for what is being taught.

When we get our children to learn on their own with a specific theme or question to answer, we can lead our children to discover knowledge on their own.

Our children can easily find tons of information from internet and they can compare the information that they read and form their own conclusion leading to the construction of their own interpretation.

Our children are able to remember the knowledge that they discover as they are the ones who form their own interpretation.

Dive Deeper

We can never get our children to dive deeper into understanding unless we let them swim without a float.

Just imagine a kid swimming using a float can never master swimming unless the float is taken away.

When we provide a problem or a topic for exploration, we are allowing our children to dive deeper to discover information and knowledge beyond reading from their textbooks.

With their own discovery, they can formulate greater understanding as well as form their own independent opinion.

They can also challenge the truth and reliability of the information rather than accept everything as facts.

Even the proven facts may change when new discoveries are made by scientists and researchers.

Opinion

When our children can form their own opinions, they are developing into critical thinkers rather than passive learners.

Learning comes alive for them and learning becomes part of their thinking habit.

When they can analysis the different facts to formulate their own conclusion, they have developed thinking skills beyond what they can gain from simply reading from their textbooks.

Lifelong learning habits can be developed and the joy of learning becomes part of them.

They can be more prepared for future demands of the need to constantly acquire new knowledge even in their adulthood due to different future job requirements.

In Conclusion

There are many other benefits when we get our children to have ownership of their own knowledge.

As parents, we cannot be the ones to stay with our children forever to provide all answers.

When we choose to let go and let them explore on their own, we are allowing them to grow into independent learners.

It may be hard in the beginning but learning becomes a second nature when they are used to learning new things on their own.

As educators, we may often lack of the time to allow such exploration of knowledge for every lesson but we should aim for children to discover knowledge on their own.

@erodedthoughts who has chosen to allow his 10 children to be home-schooled would have the liberty to let his children to discover and construct their own knowledge.

Learning becomes fun and we should aim to achieve this for every child.
