What is love?
As adults, many of us can just indicate our love for certain food so quickly and return home and declare that you love your life partner as well.
The food that you love and your life partner that you love too, do they really have equal status then?
No wonder why our children can get confused when we use the word ‘love’ so loosely.
It is good to explain to our children the difference between like and love from young.
A comparison between like and love
The fact that we may like the characteristics of a friend but we may not necessary love that person.
Like can be a good impression and certain characteristics that you favour more.
Even though you may like your friend, would you sacrifice yourself for your friend?
Not many of us are willing to sacrifice life or donate our organ to someone just because we like the person as love may not necessary exist.
True love is without conditions. If someone needs us to do something so that he/she can love us, it is no longer love as it is more like a reward.
Affection
As our children grows into their teenage years, they may have many dream partners that they are attracted too.
This is the period where many may be attracted due to outer appearance.
It is a fact that even adults are guilty of being attracted by the handsome or beautiful outlook.
Affection is not love even though I cannot deny some may develop into love.
If a teenager loves a beautiful girl, can he still love her if the girl has an accident with her outlook changes. The reality is many of them may just give excuses and leave the once upon a time dream girl of theirs.
Getting our children to understand about the unconditional love so that they are not misled by the movies can be a challenge. Many of them may believe their friends more than their parents.
Role Model
I can be quite guilty myself as well. It is really important that we set a good role model and may even need to let them know that do certain things due to love.
Example
‘A father is late for work to ensure that his child get to school on time so that his child will not get scolded. The father is scolded badly for being late in the office.’
Did the father expect anything back from the child?
The only intention is to protect his child from scolding from his teacher.
Isn’t this a good example of love from a father?
When your wife or husband is still around in your life, it is really a good chance to show your children what is unconditional love through the normal daily things.
When you help your partner with something without being asked to do so, it is already unconditional.
When we let our children know that true love is unconditional, they will understand that if ever someone demands something before they can love is not real love at all.
Parents can love their children so much that even if there is ever a need to give their organs to their children to keep them alive, they will be willing to do so due to unconditional great love.
Real life example
In my church, a husband donated his own kidney to his wife as his wife had kidney failure.
Both husband and wife only have a kidney each but his husband has sacrificed his own body to give his wife a chance to live a normal life again and out of the long suffering.
The fact is that how many teenage boys who may have declared their love for their dream girls can do such an act?
With this brutal fact, they can easily determine how much is their love.
Nevertheless, a good impression can develop into affection.
Affection can develop into true love for some.
In conclusion
When our children can identify what is true love, it can help them to avoid many wrong turns in life.
It will be hard to give them advice when they can be so blinded by their affection that they think is love.
We are all guilty as we were once blinded by affection and some of us are still unable to recognise the true love resulting lots of heartaches.

There are so many words that are thrown around with very little thought of the true meaning or impact. The word "love" is certainly one of those words that gets used more often than it should and for things where love really doesn't need to be part of the equation. There are also those that say the word is being overused. Do we really need to confirm love every single time we are leaving our partner of when we return or when we go to bed or at dinner? Does using it so much lessen the meaning or does it make it more powerful? Everone will have their own feeling about this and will use the word differently. On the opposite side is how easily the word "hate" is thrown about. Hate is a very strong word that shouldn't be tossed around so lightly.
Those are definitely wise words to ensure we mean what we declare. It is true that anything that is overused may become cheap(invaluable). Actions speak loudly than words. Show our love to our loved ones by the things we do for them without expecting anything in return. Unconditional love! Thanks for passing by to make your reflective comment!
