I agree with your points, though I have a comment on one:

Sometimes the one who gets to market first with a new technology does, indeed, have a strong advantage over those that follow. But very often, those that follow can capture a greater market share than the first because they can take advantage of the unanticipated uses of the tech that emerge that hadn't been considered at its inception. Once those uses become evident, the follow-on can adjust their version with those new uses in mind. It may also be a case that the originator can't keep up with demand, or adjust their original design in a cost-effective way to meet the demand in the new direction.

This is still the same kind of 'out of the box' thinking you are encouraging, but it is helpful to include that follow-on scenario in the discussion.
